Copper Fire District Purchases Transport Vehicle, Seeks Authorization to Assist ALA Transports ~ By Bethany Monk
Copperopolis, CA...Copperopolis Fire District purchased a transport vehicle Friday, February 1st, and is currently negotiating with and seeking authorization from American Legion Ambulance to help assist the legion with transports, according to Copperopolis Fire Chief Tony Powers....
Copper Fire Chief Tony Powers addresses
district board members and members of
the public during a special meeting Jan. 28,
regarding the ambulance issue.
Powers attended a special meeting with the legion on Wednesday January 30th, to discuss the legion’s plan to cut one of its ambulance vehicles from Calaveras County.
According to a letter last month from the legion, ALA is facing financial difficulties and needs to eliminate one of its cars from the county. Beginning Feb. 16, ALA will cut one of its 12-hour ambulance vehicles from Mokelumne Hill, leaving only three 24-hour cars and one 12-hour ambulance for county transports.
Copper Fire District held a special meeting at the district in Copperopolis on Monday, Jan. 28 to discuss the issue. Paramedics, firefighters and members of the public present at the meeting, worried that one less ambulance in the county would put people at great risk.
“We’re trying to work out an agreement (with ALA) to help out the people of our community,” Powers said in a phone interview Monday morning.
Copperopolis Fire District’s new vehicle, a Ford E450, will replace an older Expedition vehicle owned by the district, Powers said. The new vehicle has better capabilities, he said, adding that “it’s a nice rig … it should do us well.”
The district also owns a standard transport vehicle.
Powers said the district will be discussing the issue of assisting ALA transports with the legion in the upcoming weeks.
