Suspect Hides in Neighbor’s Residence to Avoid Arrest

Copperopolis, CA...On November 10, 2021, the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office investigated a reported assault that occurred in the 3000 block of Snowbird Ct, Copperopolis. During the investigation, the suspect was identified as Kenneth Donald Carnes (43 years of age from Oakdale). Suspect Carnes reportedly assaulted the victim including holding a knife to the victim’s throat during the incident.

At about 3:30pm, deputies arrived at the victim’s residence to conduct a safety sweep in order to ensure the suspect was no longer there. While approaching the residence, deputies observed suspect Carnes walking out of the victim’s garage. Deputies gave verbal commands for suspect Carnes to surrender however, he ran back into the residence, shutting the main garage door. Additional deputies were requested to the scene and eventually cleared the interior of the victim’s residence.

A neighbor near the victim’s house arrived and advised their residence was left unsecured when they left in the morning. The neighbor asked deputies to clear their residence to check for suspect Carnes. While clearing the neighbor’s residence, deputies located suspect Carnes hiding in a closet. Suspect Carnes was taken into custody without further incident. While taking suspect Carnes in to custody, he was found to possess approximately 50 ounces of methamphetamine and (5) knives.

Suspect Carnes was transported to the Calaveras County jail and booked on the following charges: two counts of 460(A) PC Residential Burglary (Felony), 236 PC False Imprisonment with Violence (Felony), 245(A)(1) PC Assault with a Deadly Weapon (Felony), 273.5(A) PC Domestic Violence (Felony), 11379(A) H&S Transport Illegal Drugs (Felony), 11378 H&S Possession of Drugs for Sale (Felony), 646.9(A) PC Stalking (Felony), 591.5 PC Destroy Cellular Phone (Misdemeanor), 148(A)(1) PC Resist or Delay Peace Officer Misdemeanor) and 148.4(A)(1) PC Tamper with Fire Alarm (Misdemeanor). In addition to the local charges, suspect Carnes also had a felony warrant issued from the Superior Court of Stanislaus County for 3455 (b) Revocation of Supervision (Felony) Calaveras County for 148 PC Resisting or Delaying Arrest. Suspect Kenneth Donald Carnes is being held without bail.

The Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind people to secure their residences when they leave.
