04/07/2024 - History of Photography Lecture @ Angels Camp Museum ~ CVB FeatureAngels Camp, CA...Kristopher Mandell has an international art education. He received his BA in Art History while at San Francisco State University where he studied abroad at the University of Amsterdam and the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in Australia. He received his MA in Art History from John Cabot University in Rome, Italy. He is currently the Executive Director of the Calaveras County Historical Society and the Director of the County Museums located in San Andreas.
Photography During the Gold Rush
During the California Gold Rush period in the mid-19th century, photography played a crucial role in documenting the dramatic social and environmental transformations of the time.
In my lecture, I will be showcasing a variety of photographic examples that illustrate the diverse uses of photography during this period. This will include daguerreotypes and tintypes capturing the faces of gold miners and settlers, providing a glimpse into their daily lives and struggles.
Additionally, I’ll explore photographs depicting the booming mining towns, bustling with activity and commerce, as well as images of the rugged landscapes that drew thousands in search of fortune. Overall, these photographic examples will offer insight into the multifaceted ways in which photography both documented and shaped the narrative of the California Gold Rush era.
We hope you’ll join us Sunday, April 7th at the Angels Camp Museum Carriage House!
