A Bit of Wisdom from the 1738 Poor Richard's Almanac

Philadelphia, PA...Our Favorite Founding Father is Ben Franklin. He didn't just help found our country during the 1776 era.   For two generations before he helped sell concepts of Freedom, Self-Determination & Inalienable rights. From 1733 to 1758 Poor Richards Almanac helped create the unique American identity in a homey, common sense, aspirational way. A few Bits of Wisdom from 1738...

There are three faithful friends, an old wife, an old dog, and ready money.
Who has deceiv'd thee so oft as thy self?
Buy what thou hast no need of; and e'er long thou shalt sell thy necessaries.
Read much, but not many books.
Write with the learned, pronounce with the vulgar.
Hast thou virtue? acquire also the graces & beauties of virtue.
If you wou'd not be forgotten As soon as you are dead and rotten, Either write things worth reading, Or do things worth the writing.
Sell not virtue to purchase wealth, nor Liberty to purchase power.
Let thy vices die before thee.
Keep your eyes wide open before marriage, half shut afterwards.
Since thou art not sure of a minute, throw not away an hour.
Since I cannot govern my own tongue, tho' within my own teeth, how can I hope to govern the tongues of others?
Time is an herb that cures all Diseases.
Drive thy business; let not that drive thee.
Search others for their virtues, thy self for thy vices.

If thou hast wit & learning, add to it Wisdom and Modesty.
You may be more happy than Princes, if you will be more virtuous.
The ancients tell us what is best; but we must learn of the moderns what is fittest.
'Tis less discredit to abridge petty charges, than to stoop to petty Gettings.
If you do what you should not, you must hear what you would not.
Wish not so much to live long as to live well.
As we must account for every idle word, so we must for every idle silence.
I have never seen the Philosopher's Stone that turns lead into Gold, but I have known the pursuit of it turn a Man's Gold into Lead.
Reading makes a full Man, Meditation a profound Man, discourse a clear Man.
If any man flatters me, I'll flatter him again; tho' he were my best Friend.
Wish a miser long life, and you wish him no good.
None but the well-bred man knows how to confess a fault, nor acknowledge himself in an error.
There is much difference between imitating a good man, and counterfeiting him.
Each year one vicious habit rooted out, In time might make the worst Man good throughout.
Wink at small faults; remember thou hast great ones.
Eat to please thyself, but dress to please others.

Donald Trump can’t stay awake in court. He’s currently on trial in New York for the Stormy Daniels hush money case — the actual election interference — and if convicted, he could face prison time. The proceedings should demand his complete attention, but he’s nodding off like he’s listening to a friend’s tedious poetry reading.

Maggie Haberman at the New York Times reported last Monday, on the first day of Trump’s trial, that the former president “appeared to nod off a few times, his mouth going slack and his head drooping onto his chest.” It wasn’t a fluke event. Haberman noted that Trump also fell asleep “several times” last Friday. His head dropped twice and his eyes were “closed for extended periods.” It was as if her beat had devolved into daycare nap monitor.
Trump struggled to stay awake this Monday as well, according to New York Times reporter Susanne Craig.

“His eyes were closed for a short period. He was jolted awake when Todd Blanche, his lawyer, nudged him while sliding a note in front of him,” Craig wrote. This was barely an hour into the day’s proceedings.

Trump seemed to acknowledge the difficulty he’s having staying awake on Tuesday, complaining during one of his courthouse whine sessions that "I'm here in a courtroom sitting up as straight as I can all day long

Media outlets have mentioned Trump’s courtroom slumbers as mere color commentary rather than a major story in itself.

Trump turns 78 in June and is running for another presidential term, which would end when he’s 82. His physical fitness and mental alertness are relevant issues. An old man snoozing in court like someone’s grandfather at the end of Thanksgiving dinner directly contradicts the strongman image that Trump and his right-wing media accomplices want to present to voters. That image was always laughable, but it’s rarely been so openly exposed as nonsense.

Harvard Professor Emeritus Alan Dershowitz stated he no longer has any “loyalty” to the Democratic Party on Monday, and that he would not exclusively vote Democrat in future elections.

Dershowitz, a long-time Democrat who has been a major critic of President Joe Biden and the current administration, said his party has been an “extraordinary disappointment” because they have not been very vocal about the pro-Palestine protests at Columbia University, which have been ongoing since last Wednesday.

“We're hearing nothing from Democrats. We are hearing nothing from Chuck Schumer,” Dershowitz said on the "Just the News, No Noise" TV show. “We're hearing nothing really direct from President Biden. He made a very disappointing statement. In the same breath, he talked about the demonstrators in passing and he said, ‘but you have to understand the Palestinian situation.’ No, you don't have to understand the Palestinian situation. When people are calling for rape and murder and beheading. The Democrats are an extraordinary disappointment."

"I am no longer presumptively voting for Democrats," he said. "I'm gonna vote for whoever is the best candidate, that may include Democrats, but I have no loyalty anymore to the party.”

Dershowitz also slammed college admissions and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) policies as contributing to the problems recently seen at elite universities.

“Many of the students [protesting] today are unqualified students,” Dershowitz said. “They were admitted because of DEI. They were admitted because Qatar and other Arab countries are paying for foreign students. These are not the best and the brightest students, they are the loudest students, but they're certainly not students who are looking out for the best interests of America.”

The former Ivy League professor additionally claimed that Jewish students are being treated like “third-class citizens,” and that what has erupted in the country over the Israel-Palestine war is worse than the January 6 riot on Capitol Hill in 2021.

“What we're seeing is something that I believe, and this is going to be very controversial, I believe is potentially more dangerous than January 6, which was terrible, and than Charlottesville, which was terrible,” Dershowitz said. “Because those didn't involve as many students, not as many elite people, as many future leaders. We're hearing the future leaders of America chanting ‘We are Hamas.’ In other words, ‘we are rapists. We believe in raping Jewish women. We are beheaders. We are kidnappers. We are murderers.’ That's what they're chanting. And these are people who will run for Congress ... 10 years from now, who will be partners at law firms, and who will be working in the editorial rooms of CNN, and the New York Times.
