This Week on "Calaveras Uncorked" A Chat with Anna Gates, Owner of Catano Winery in San Andreas
San Andreas, CA....We had the great pleasure of meeting with Anna Gates who with her husband Joe, own Catano Winery in downtown historic San Andreas. Catano Winery is now the first winery to open a tasting room in San Andreas. They specialize in Dessert Wines as low as $6 per bottle! Thank you for being our featured winery this week on "Calaveras Uncorked"...
So here is a short version of our story. In 1990 Joe started planting a vineyard on a 40-acre parcel in Calaveras county. He planted only Portuguese varietals. In 2000 Joe started building what would become Catano Winery on the lower level and the family home up top. In 2002 Joe and new wife Anna had their first harvest in their own bonded winery.
All grapes are hand picked, pressed, bottled, and labeled by a very supportive group of family and friends. After a hard days work, they enjoy food and wine together!
Quintetta is a name that we came to because we use 5 traditional Portuguese Port varietals: Tinta Cao, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franscsa, Tinta Roriz, and Alvarelhao. Our most recent release of Quintetta features grapes from 3 vineyards in Sacramento, Tuolumne, and Calaveras counties; and is a blend consisting of 88% 2002, and 12% 2003. This is a specialty blend chosen from many different barrels to give it a more traditional Portuguese taste and balance.
We are looking forward to releasing another reserve, a vintage and a tawny Quintetta in the future!!
