Lose The Lawn....Conserve Dollars and Water
Master Gardeners May Open Garden Day will be held May 23 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at their Demonstration Garden at the Government Center, 891 Mountain Ranch Road, San Andreas. The featured topic at 10:30 a.m. will be “Lose the Lawn – How to Conserve Dollars and Water.”...
Lawns require continuous maintenance and large amounts of water. They may be appropriate in climates with year round rainfall, but here in California lawns are not such a good choice given our water shortages and hot dry climate.
Instead of a lawn, what options does a homeowner have? There are many other grasses and ground covers that can be substituted for lawns. Learn what those plants are, how to care for them and how installing such a landscape will save time and money.
Look for special activities in the Children’s Garden at each open garden day during the summer months, June through August. A special event to kick off the summer schedule will be held on Saturday, May 30th from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. Don’t miss this free "Kids Day in the Garden" featuring storytelling, arts and crafts, music and much more!
All gardening information is offered free of charge at the garden’s learning center staffed by Master Gardeners who answer questions and distribute reference materials. The demonstration garden is also open by appointment. Educational tours for community groups, school groups, clubs and other organizations can be scheduled by contacting Karen Riley at 754-6473.
When the garden is not open, home gardening assistance is offered by Master Gardeners through the Help Line: 754-2880. The public may call the number, leave a message regarding the problem, and a Master Gardener will return the call.
Interested in becoming a Master Gardener? The next training class starts in January, 2010 and will be held in San Andreas. Call 754-2880 and leave a message asking to have your contact information added to the training mailing list.
