Bear Valley Has Best Opening in 5 years......Chair Lift Interview with CEO, Martin Wegenstein~by John Hamilton

Bear Valley, CA...As the Christmas - New Year break came to a close yesterday we thought it would be a good time to check in with Bear Valley Mountain Resort's CEO, Martin Wegenstein to see how their season in progressing so far. We were delighted to hear that they have had their best opening in 5 years. Our interview took place on Bear Valley's "Kuma Chair" and lasted just...

about 6 minutes.....in other words a trip up Kuma chair.

This is great news for our local business community. Bear Valley currently has 350 full and part time employees and is the largest seasonal employer in our region. Their early season numbers also bode well for our economy as a whole.

Many of our local restaurant meals, vacation rentals, winery sales and motel stays are driven by the wintertime pull of our high country. From our observation, it looked like all of Bear Valley including Bear Valley Village had a great holiday run. Bear Valley Lodge's General Manager, Mark Phillips, mentioned that they had very good numbers as well. Bear Valley Cross Country's, Paul Peterson said that while they still need to tabulate their numbers, but had a great opening as well.

We also saw good sized crowds at many of Arnold's restaurants and establishments, so many in our area finished out 2009 with goods numbers.

Bear Valley is also looking forward to the January 19th, Alpine County Board of Supervisor's meeting where approval of the Bear Valley Village and Resort expansion plans is on the agenda. CEO, Wegenstein, reiterated that all the interested parties have been working behind scenes and making good progress on the various mitigation measures.

Now if we can time all future winter storms to only arrive on Tue-Thurs and keep all those weekends nice and sunny for the rest of the season....
