Fishing Report HWY 4 Corridor April 15, 2010~by Bill Reynolds

Welcome to Ebbetts Pass Sporting Goods first fishing report for the the 2010 season. I apologize for the delay in getting this report out. We have had some tough issues to overcome (fish plants). I did not want to prematurely send a report that was not complete. It has been a long and snowy winter with most high country spots inaccessible until the snowmelts. We are looking forward to enjoying a great fishing year. First I would like to address the current fish plant situation. A second lawsuit filed, on a prestocking protocol for planting rainbow trout, against the DFG in January of this year was filed again by The Center for Biological Diversity, located in Tuscon Arizona. Feel free to contact these people and let them know your dis-pleasure. Here is their contact information: Phone: 520-623-5252 or toll free ....

We have taken enough of this do-gooder attitude as these people show no remorse about disrupting all of our families, our fishing heritage or about our businesses and the many lives they affect throughout the county. They only care about their 255,000 members and their agenda to save the world. With the economy being the way it is this will have a devastating affect on our little community.

I have worked diligently with the Department of Fish and Game since I heard about the second lawsuit. I submitted for a private stocking permit along with DFG planting. We are waiting to hear from Calaveras County to see if they will help. I received a call last Thursday with the go ahead for my private planting permit and information that White Pines Lake located near Arnold will be on the PLANT LIST for this year. DFG will be planting first, as I need to solicit funds for any private plants. There is a donation jar at the store and any company donations will be greatly appreciated and should be sent directly to Bill Reynolds, c/o Ebbetts Pass Sporting Goods, P.O. Box 579, Arnold, CA 95223. If you need further information you can contact us at the store 209-795-1686.

Due to all of the recent snow most places will not be accessible for the opener. Spicer Res., Lake Alpine, Mosquito Lake just to mention a few. But with all of the new water we are looking forward to a long fishing season.

The North Fork of the Stanislaus River will be running high due to snow runoff. Bait casters should try crickets, salmon eggs, nightcrawlers. Power Bait has just released their new scents for 2010. They now have salmon egg scent, and garlic in the popular colors, along with the new hatchery pellet scent. Lure casters should try Panther Martin's, Rooster Tails, and Rapalas. Fly fishermen should try bead head nymphs and sinking line as the flows are fast and high due to runoff.

We will have our annual fly seminar on Saturday May 15th, from 9:00AM-12:00PM. Fly reps will be on hand for demos and instruction.

Camping will be limited this upcoming weekend. Big Trees State Park is located on Highway 4 approximately three miles above Arnold. You can contact them at 209-795-2334 or their website www.ca.gov and go to Calaveras Big Trees. There is also Golden Pines RV Resort. Their website is www.goldenpinesrvresort.com.

Right now we are looking forward to resuming our Father's Day Derby this year.

Thanks to all of our customers for your patronage. We look forward to seeing you soon
