Impromptu Car Show in Copperopolis~by Charity Maness

Copperopolis was privy to a wonderful impromtu car show Saturday afternoon as a collection of antique and collector cars stopped at Town Square for a quick ice cream at Cruiser’s for some, coffee at Snap’s for those driving convertibles. What started out, ten years ago, as a few friends that loved to drive the country roads in their beautiful cars has become an annual event that seems to have gathered quite a following. Today’s trek began in Modesto with a pancake breakfast at the home of the organizational genius. Her neighbors all look forward to this day with great anticipation as they take their children and friends for a walk by her house, even if it’s out of the way by a few blocks, so that they can view the beautiful automobiles. After everyone has a full stomach they take the back roads through Oakdale, up Milton Road, to Copperopolis for a quick stop; their final destination…Murphy’s. I was told that at times they experience the break neck speed of a whopping 35 MPH! This would be due to the much older, highly coveted classic cars that are in their group, primarily the ‘53 MG.

Today’s ride took them through treacherous territory as they had the opportunity to experience our version of the running of the bulls; a cattle drive on Milton. The all laughed jovially as they inspected each other’s cars for the telltale manure spatters. This day will undoubtedly be a story that will be retold for years to come.
