Letter to the Editor~by Les Martin

"QUALIFICATIONS KEY IN LOCAL ELECTIONS...A few months ago our current Treasurer/Tax Collector placed before the BOS a draft ordinance which would have established specific requirements for the office she was vacating due to her retirement. I was shocked when the BOS turned down this request. I addressed the BOS in public session that it seemed ridiculous that “fogging the mirror” be the only qualification for such an important position....

I still maintain that there is a tremendous amount of training and experience necessary to fulfill the duties of key positions such as; Auditor, Treasurer/Tax Collector, Assessor and Clerk Recorder.

People in the above offices are subject to very stringent rules within which they and their departments must operate and are held responsible to follow those codes and laws which govern their office.

Claims made by candidates to change procedures are questionable as those elected positions have little policy making power.

Our county government will be in disaster mode if candidates with NO experience or education in the specific field are voted in.

We cannot afford to elect “trainees” into these positions of responsibility. It is my opinion that those candidates who have both experience and education applicable to the specific office be chosen.

Les Martin"
