Fishtank Ensemble takes Copperopolis by Storm~by Charity Maness

Copperopolis, CA...Opening night for Music in the Parks in Copperopolis Town Square brought to you by the Calaveras Arts Council was an amazingly uplifting experience. The crowds began to claim their slice of shaded lawn early in the evening, setting out blankets, and picnics fit for a king. Snaps had their fair share of wine sippers enjoying the unobstructed view of the gazebo from the patio, while ice cream lovers devoured cones from Cruiser’s. A few of man’s best friend were also present, patiently awaiting the music with ......

anticipation while eyeing the many tasty morsels laying just out of reach.
By 6:30 the seating room left available was that of the side walk, which quickly became populated. Introductions were made and the music began to flow. At first it was a kitchy (if that’s a word) jazz infused Slavic piece leaving one stunned by the talent and yet trying to absorb the full realm of the sounds. By the third piece, people lost their inhibitions and began dancing to the beat. Soon after, the audience was rewarded with bass player Djordje’s signature rockabilly bass slap and more dancers.

Fishtank Ensemble was by far the most talented quartet of creative energy I have had the opportunity to experience. Formed in 2005, their music is derived from their various national backgrounds and their artistic somewhat quirky musical adventures.

Fabrice Martinez, violinist, travels Europe in a mule drawn caravan seeking inspiration from locals while sharing his phenomenal musical talents. Ursula Knudson self taught on the saw, sings in Romanian, French, Japanese, and English. Douglas Smolens, guitar, enjoys pushing the envelope of Flamenco. Djordje Stijepovic, bass, performed with leading bands of Serbia providing gypsy infused sounds with his signature rockabilly slap.

The evening of music at Copperopolis Town Square was a wonderful start to a fantastic season line up for Music in the Parks.
