"Is Socialism the New American Dream? Letter to The Editor ~by Al Segalla

"Is Socialism the New American Dream?.....I tend to think of socialism as government enslavement of the people, violating their natural human rights to life, liberty and property. Proponents of that system would more likely agree with the Wikipedia definition: “Socialism is an economic and political theory based on public or common ownership and cooperative management of the means of production and allocation of resources.” One of the problems of socialism is the creation of dependency on government for our important needs, such as housing, medical care, food etc. While it is good to have limited government for purposes of defending our natural rights, we all too often ask government to do so much more. We fail to realize that government produces nothing; it can only take from some to give to others. An excellent book on this is the classic: “The Law” by Fredric Bastiat. A must read as he clearly defined human rights....

History teaches us that being too dependent on government tends to have tragic consequences. Perhaps this is because socialism fails to address the flaws in human nature and attracts despotic leaders.

The last century has many examples of horrible oppressive regimes plundering and even committing mass murder of innocent people. In every case, the despotic leaders needed the people to be dependent on government to control the population. Some examples are: NAZI Germany, All the former Soviet captive nations, Cuba (including the previous regime), China, Viet Nam, Cambodia and many more.

But, that is not all; the same enslavement of humankind goes all the way back to the beginning of human existence. It usually is not so much charm that propels leaders to the top, but lust for power and ruthlessness. In every case, tyranny needs the people’s dependence on government for its very existence. Socialism is to civilization as cancer is to the human body. On the other hand, when people are free and independent, prosperity and happiness follow.

Do we have to repeat history? I think not. Our founding fathers knew history and created our country based on limited government. That is the purpose of the Constitution and under which America flourished, prospered and became the envy of humankind. We inherited the blessings of limited government. Maybe now is the time to roll socialism back, follow the Constitution and restore the American dream.

To me, this is the purpose of the Tea Party movement and why we must protect property rights in land use public policy. "
