Calaveras County Walker, Ric Ryan , Receives Quilt of Honor!

Valley Springs, CA...Saturday Morning the parking lot in front of Hawgs Dawgs in Valley Springs was filled with motorcycles, booths and more. They were there for the Quilts of Honor Motorcycle Run. The local Quilts of Honor Organization is spearheaded by Gail Belmont a local veteran who was very active in the "Quilts of Valor" organization before starting "Quilts of Honor" Quilts of Honor focuses on giving quilts to honor those who have been wounded in the service of their county or are seeking to help those who have. One of those honored was Murphys resident Ric Ryan. He is reaching his 2,771 mile goal of walking the distance from Calaveras County to Washington DC. For every mile he has walked he has raised money for "Operation Mend" who helps veterans with disfiguring facial injuries...

He originally wanted to walk across the US from his home in Murphys to the Vietnam Memorial. This proved to difficult to logistically do. Ric chose a different path of walking the distance, but doing so one mile at a time right here in Calaveras County.

You may have seen the "Walking Man from Murphys" on his daily walks around the area. He is donating money for each wave you give him Ric strives to raise more so that he can also help local service men or women returning home that are in need of extra medical care. If you would like to help Ric with his mission please contact him at RLR1970@hotmail.com or give him a call at 209-728-2388.

Charity Maness wrote about his quest much more eloquently than I in a previous piece.

The primary heroes of the day were those hard working Quilters from the Quilts of Honor organization. Their work has touched thousands. If you would like to find out more about their organization you can visit them at Quilts Of Honor's Website

In addition to Ric Ryan Quilts of Honor were presented to Robert, a Purple Heart recipient and to Felix a Vietnam Veteran and President of the Stockton Harley group and a driving force behind the event.

It was a great, patriotic event! There was even a Harley with a "Quilt" paint job.
