What’s Thanksgiving Without a Friendly Game of Football? ~ By, Charity Maness

Embracing the seemingly ageless tradition of a Thanksgiving Day football game, Copper volunteer firefighters opted for the ‘anti coach potato’ alternative and along with friends and family enjoyed a lively game of flag football to kick off their Thanksgiving Day. Teams were split as evenly as possible pitting fathers against sons, brothers against brothers, all in the name of fun. Not to be daunted by the brisk 48 degrees, spirits were high and the jokes were abundant as the game began; red flags against yellow...

It was evident early on that the ringers in the group were the kids. Colby Westberg, nephew of volunteer Engineer John Fredricks, literally flew through the air with seeming ease and great skill, caught a pass midair and landed, albeit on his stomach, in the end zone…completing the first touchdown for his team. The other team was put on notice, Colby was a football player to be reckoned with. Not one to sit long in the shadow of his nephew, John showed some moves of his own, completing catch after catch and grabbing a few flags along the way.

While the game played to a whopping six points, it was unclear as to who came out the victor.

Very apropos to gather on day set aside to give thanks, to join with friends, family, and colleagues creating a wonderful and lasting bond of camaraderie. It was repeated by many of the muddy, cold players as they were leaving, “I hope we do this again.”
