Ironstone Hosts Suzuki School Orchestra Christmas Concert ~By Patrick Works
December 11, 2011 Murphys, CA...Ironstone Vineyards Music Room. THIS is why they call it 'the music room'! Brook Moes, director and principal instructor of the Suzuki School of Northern California brought out 57 students, aged four to nineteen years, for a free orchestral performance of their Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols Sunday evening at Ironstone Vineyards in Murphys...

This free event is new to Ironstone, though the Suzuki School of Northern California has a long established reputation throughout the state and the west as a premier provider of musical education for our youth. Brook Moes is something of a local institution, having his hands in everything from music, to martial arts, to baseball. Suzuki School students led by Mr. Moes have toured and performed all over the world, most recently performing in Italy.
It was Calaveras County's turn to be treated Sunday night as the orchestra seats were all full, as were the parking lots at Ironstone and the audience seating in the Music Room.
Kerry Keany, event coordinator for Ironstone Vineyards, told thepinetree.net that arrangements for this performance, a Christmas gift from Ironstone and the Suzuki School of Northern California, were only begun a few weeks ago.
Evidently the word got out, as staff at Ironstone kept having to add chairs, and then it was standing room only as the walls were packed with dozens and dozens of people happily remaining for a joyful night!
"Next year we'll definitely have them back, and we'll have to open the outer room as well. This was a far better turnout than anything we expected." Ms. Keany told us.
While this reporter is no music critic, I must say that the average violin recital with a few kids scratching away to the polite and proud grins of parents was about as far away from Sunday night's concert as could be imagined.
If you closed your eyes you were transported by sound; a sound equal to any orchestra in any city. The youth of the players was in no way apparent, unless you were in attendance as a parent! They played magnificently and quite professionally. This night was something new and very special for Calaveras County.
Leading off the night's program was a stunning vocal solo by Brittany Duggan singing "Oh Come, Oh Come Emanuel". The program then reached back literally hundreds of years as the history of Christmas music unfolded. Interspersed with the music were of course the lessons, as members of the orchestra took turns reading and reminding us all what Christmas really is about.
If you missed the performance, please enjoy the pictures we took Sunday night, and make a point of visiting the Suzuki School of Northern California at their website www.moesviolin.com You'll be able to find out more about the school and even hear recordings of past performances!
Ironstone Vineyards was pleased to collaborate with Mr. Moes and his students to present this night of unusual beauty. Please see what else Ironstone Vineyards has in store for our community by visiting them at www.ironstonevineyards.com
