Placerville, CA...The King Fire area closure is effect in the Eldorado National Forest beginning September 17, announced Forest Supervisor Laurence Crabtree. “Under our Unified Command System, our top priorities are fighting this fire and keeping the fire fighters and the public safe, said Crabtree. “We cannot safely fight this fire with intermingled publics. Please stay out of the closed areas until I can reopen them, which I intend to do as soon as possible.”......

Arnold, CA...We spoke with the Caltrans District 10 office today and starting tomorrow after conferring with the District Engineer they will be passing along more detailed information on the repairs. Instead of saying just Douglas Flat to Meko they will be giving mileage range for current work. On the bright side when the patching and overlay is complete Hwy 4 should be in great shape for the next several years....

Camino, CA...CAL FIRE and United States Forest Service (USFS) law enforcement officers, in conjunction with the El Dorado County District Attorney’s Office and the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office, arrested a Pollock Pines man on suspicion of arson in connection with the King Fire. Wayne Allen Huntsman, 37, of Pollock Pines was booked into the El Dorado County Jail for arson on Wednesday, September 17, 2014. Federal, State and Local law enforcement officers work diligently in arson cases to aggressively investigate and prosecute those suspected of intentionally starting fires....

San Francisco, CA...Restore Hetch Hetchy put out a call to action in a special fundraising appeal to ‘outbid San Francisco’ for the rights to the Hetch Hetchy Valley last month and nearly 200 people responded bidding $63,684 – more than twice what San Francisco pays annually in rent to the National Park Service. The funds will support Restore Hetch Hetchy’s ongoing mission to return the Hetch Hetchy Valley in Yosemite National Park to its natural splendor while continuing to meet the water and power needs of all communities that depend on the Tuolumne River....

King Fire Prompts Backcountry Advisory & Rubicon Trail Now Closed

South Lake Tahoe, Calif. –Due to the uncertain path of the King Fire, the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit has closed the McKinney Rubicon Trail and is advising against travel into the Desolation or Granite Chief wildernesses. The Eldorado National Forest has issued a forest closure for its Desolation Wilderness trails and trailheads. In particular, hikers and equestrians should consider cancelling plans for overnight travel into the Desolation and Granite Chief wildernesses....

King Fire Devoured 43,000 Acres Yesterday! Now 70,944 Acres

Pollock Pines, CA...Fire behavior was extreme yesterday with an estimated increase of 43,000 acres push to the north of over ten miles. Highway 50 is subject to closure based on fire behavior.. The fire continued to burn actively throughout the night. However: due to the days extreme fire behavior, steep terrain, inaccessibility, variable wind direction, an darkness it was unsafe to approach the north portion of the fire to directly observe the fire behavior. Field observations, and Infrared imagery it was determined that the fire made a run of over ten miles t the north between the hours of 1600 and 0600. Spot fires were observed up to three miles ahead of the main fire front....

Yosemite National Park, CA...Meadow (37 42.738 x 119 30.541 – Mariposa Co., 7,870’, August 16). The fire is at 4,772 acres and 85% containment. On September 16 at 0600 the South Central Sierra Interagency Incident Management Team turned this fire back to the park. It is now being managed by a Type 3 organization with a smaller over-head and two wildland fire modules team. The strategy is to continue to confine and contain the fire perimeter, monitor the fire and utilize Minimum Impact Suppression Tactics (MIST) tactics and natural barriers as needed. ....
