Four Perish In Fiery Plane Crash At Columbia Airport

Columbia, CA...At 4:45 PM, Tuolumne County Sheriff's Office received a report of a plane crash at the Columbia Airport in Columbia. The small private plane was coming from the north to land on the runway. It is reported that the plane veered to left off of the runway and crashed. The plane was completely engulfed in flames when emergency crews arrived on scene. There are four deceased victims. The Coroner will be determining identification and notifying next of kin. The National Transportation Safety Board out of Colorado, will be arriving tomorrow to initiate the investigation. There is no information as to where the plane was coming from or headed to. This is a very tragic event and our hearts go out to the families of these victims.

(Updated as of 6:30pm...2 acres with potential of 30-40 acres on north side of Calaveritas Road.. They should get it dealt with quickly) (Update as of 6:42pm....4-5 acres and making good progress on knocking it down)

Columbia, CA...(Update as of 5:11pm...they are getting a handle on fire and forward progress stopped at about 2 acres! The Tuolumne County Sheriff's department has reported that the plane was fully engulfed shortly after the crash. The fire on the plane has been extinguished as well) CHP & Scanner traffic are reporting an airplane down at Columbia Airport. There is also a fire with spread to vegetation. Our thoughts and prayers to the pilot's family and friends as initial reports are that the pilot has probably passed away.
Jamestown, CA...Firefighters are back at work again on a structure fire with some spread to vegetation in the 14,000 Block of Twist Road. We will update if it spreads too far beyond the structure. There is potential for an up to 20 acre blaze. It is going to be a long time until November...
Valley Springs, CA...Lynn Eloise Smith was born in 1930, in Placentia, California to Raymond and Olive Johnson. She worked over 25 years as a Unit Secretary for both Bay General Hospital, in San Diego and Enloe Hospital in Chico California. She and her husband, Roy, lived in Paradise, California for many years and moved to Valley Springs over twenty years ago. She was an avid reader ,enjoyed embroidering and crocheting and played the piano. Her greatest joy was spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Angels Camp, CA...On Monday July 11th 2016 Robert Kirk Andersen 56 passed away peacefully at his home in Angels Camp. Kirk had been battling congestive heart failure. Kirk was born on December 19th 1959 at Mark Twain Hospital in San Andreas to Robert C and Joann (Henley) Andersen. Kirk attended Mark Twain Elementary School and Bret Harte High School where he excelled in wrestling and winning many championship matches which resulted in him being honored in the Bret Harte High School Wrestling Hall of Fame. After graduation Kirk attended San Joaquin Delta College where he earned a certificate on auto mechanics. He begin his career as a mechanic for Stewarts Ford in San Andreas. He worked for Western Sources Talc Plant in Toyon for several years before attaining his general contractor’s license. Kirk was a skilled carpenter and stone mason and worked for many county residents over the years. He was a member of E Clampus Vitas and enjoyed fishing and being with his many friends throughout the county.
Valley Springs, CA...Rickie Mae Fry passed away peacefully at home at the age of 80, on Tuesday, July 19, 2016. She was with her husband, sister and son. Rickie was born on January 20, 1936 in Los Angeles, CA. She spend the last 25 years in Burson. She is survived by her husband Wayne, 2 sons, Wayne Thomas and Ronald, her sister Margie McLaughlin, and brother James Hancock. She is also survived by her grandchildren Scotty, Ronnie, Katherine as well as 6 great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her daughter, Kathy Ann.

Jamestown, CA....Firefighters on ground and air are working a vegetation fire that has closed Hwy 108 near Obyrnes Ferry. East and Westbound lanes are affected. Fire is about 3ac in size and power lines are either down or running through fire. Update as of 12:29pm...They are trying to contain fire to northwest side of Hwy and if successful may be able to open eastbound lanes shortly. Updates as of 12:48pm...Traffic is moving again with one way traffic controls in place. Tanker has been released and fire contained at 3 acres. Great job fire fighters)

San Andreas, CA...Yesterday morning the meeting room at the Sheriff's Dept headquarters was filled to overflowing with friends family and well wishers as the Calaveras Sheriff's Department held a swearing in ceremony for eight new hires and promoted four. The new hires are Corrections Officer Katrina Large, Corrections Officer Jason Crawford, Dispatcher Samantha King, Business Administrator Maria Hinsey, Deputy Erik Schrantz, Deputy Lance Williams, Deputy Brian Terry, Deputy Talya-Ann Mattos. Congratulations to Sergeant Heather Gordon, Sergeant Kevin Stevens, Corporal DeAyrian Sanchez and Corporal Jim Moser on their promotions.

San Andreas, CA...The Calaveras County Clerk Recorder and Registrar of Voters has issued an order to hold the recall election for the purpose of determining whether County Supervisor District 5, Steven Kearney is to be recalled and to fill the vacancy if the member is recalled; pursuant to Elections Code Section 11241 which states: “If the governing board fails to issue the order within the time specified in section 11240, the county elections official, within five days shall set the date for holding the election.” The proclamation and notice of election is attached. The filing period opens today July 27, 2016 and closes August 25, 2016, this closing filing period applies to candidates filing for the Supervisor District 5 contest only.

Arnold, CA...Another vegetation fire in the Arnold area on Thunderbolt Trail, 1/8th acre in subdivision. Aircraft are overhead now. Update as of 7:20pm...fire contained. Great work firefighters on ground and air!!!! (Editor's note: This is not per TCU Command but only our comments. Since we had two starts within about 60 min and fairly close together please report anything you see as suspicious. It may be nothing but a bad coincidence and prevention is investigating. But in an abundance of caution if you see anything or anyone that doesn't look right call it in.)

Arnold, CA...Units on ground and air are on way to a reported vegetation fire in the Love Creek Area. Let's pray they get it knocked down quickly. Update between Hwy 4 and Moran. (Update as of 6:20pm....1/4 acre near Red Tail Hawk and looks like they will keep it around that size...Whew...) (Update as of 6:29pm...forward progress stopped. Some units will stay on scene for mop up and to make sure it stays out. Prevention has also been called.) Great Job Firefighters!!! A fire at that elevation and fuel load is always a scary thing...

Some of the agenda items are: Receive a Report from the Board Chair, Department Heads, CalOES and FEMA Update on Butte Fire Recovery. Approve Changes to Position Control List for positions related to the Medical Cannabis Cultivation Registration Program. Authorize the Board Chair to execute a Professional Services Agreement between Calaveras County and Phillips & Jordan, Inc., for Hazardous Tree Removal Services due to the Butte Fire Incident for an amount not to exceed $9,775,053.39 and a term ending August 31, 2017.

Residents Interrupt San Jose Man As He Burgled Murphys Home

Murphys, CA...On 7-22-16, Calaveras County Deputies received a report of a burglary in progress on the 1800 block of French Gulch Road, in Murphys. The burglary was interrupted by the homeowner and the suspect fled on foot. While deputies were responding to the area, Sheriff’s Dispatch Center received numerous calls from citizens giving updates on the suspect’s location. Citizens were able to detain the suspect until deputies arrived on scene. The suspect was identified as Joseph Michael Morgali (26 years old) from San Jose.

Copperopolis, CA...On 7-24-16 at about 1645 hours, Calaveras County Marine Division responded to Lake Tulloch for a vessel accident with major injuries. The accident occurred when a boat was pulling a water tube with two female’s riders when another boat struck the tube carrying the victims. The driver of the boat left the immediate area. The driver was later identified as Dean Payne (55 years old), from Copperopolis.

Calaveras County Public Health Issues Heat Advisory To Residents

San Andreas, CA...Calaveras County Public Health Services has issued a heat advisory for the County. We urge the public to act now to prevent heat-related illness. Temperatures of 100 degrees or more are expected over the next several days. Dr. Kelaita, County Health Officer, stated, “Taking action now can prevent the possibility of heat-related illness. Some health conditions such as obesity, fever, dehydration, heart disease, poor circulation, sunburn and drug/alcohol use can make it harder for the body to say cool in hot weather.”

Valley Springs, CA...CHP is reporting a couple of incidents at this time. In the Valley Springs area there is a collision near Hwy 26 and Garner Place. In Tuolumne County there are reports of a potential Jumper on the Jacksonville Bridge. Drove over that bridge yesterday. Waay too high for fun but not quite high enough to be certain of a different outcome. Probable outcome would be a much worse life of sipping meals through a straw...

Murphys, CA...Calaveras County residents are invited to the opening of a new Saturday bus service at the inaugural Saturday Hopper ride on Saturday, July 23. The bus route will offer residents and visitors a worry free way to appreciate the various attractions and destinations from Valley Springs to Murphys. Opening festivities include ribbon cutting ceremonies at each stop on the first run of the day, including the 11:23 am stop at the Visitor Center in Angels Camp with Mayor Wes Kulm. Riders are encouraged to join in the celebration.
