Detwiler Fire Morning Update, 75,200 acres, 30% Contained, 60 Residences Destroyed, 1 Commercial Building Lost, 63 Minor Structures Burned, 13 Residences Damaged and 7 Minor Structures Damaged, 4,489 Personnel Working Fire.

Posted by: thepinetree on 07/22/2017 08:55 AM
Mariposa, CA...The 4,489 strong fire fighting army that has been assembled to battle this fire now has the upper hand and are working hard on putting the Detwiler in the history books. There is a long, long way to go but this does seem like an apt place to insert a Churchill quote..."Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning. Winston Churchill Ok, now for the latest..Last night firefighters continued to construct and reinforce fire lines. Today conditions will start to heat up. High temperatures are expected to range from 96-102 degrees with minimum humidities from 12-16 percent. Fire activity is expected to be moderate with isolated tree torching. The damage inspection team is now approximately 98 percent complete with their assessment of damaged and destroyed buildings. We ask the public to exercise caution and remember that, “One Less Spark-One Less Wildfire”.

Click Above for the IAP or Incident Action Plan for today. We hadn't included these before now as these tend to be very conservative and rightly so but can be upsetting to those whose property or homes fall inside the areas not seen as immediately defensible. As an example for the Butte Fire some of the IAPs had "keeping the fire out of the Stanislaus Drainage as a goal. Which by default meant using Hwy 4 as a defense line if necessary. Those whose homes ended up being south of the burn area but north of Hwy 4 are very glad it never had to come to that. Now that they have the upper hand on the Detwiler the additional details can be fascinating without causing anxiety to those near the fire.

Letter to the BOS – Let the People Vote ~ Letter to the Editor By David Tunno

Posted by: thepinetree on 07/21/2017 03:08 PM
Valley Springs, CA...If the Board of Supervisors desires, ultimately, not to make the final decision on whether marijuana activities should be allowed in Calaveras County, or at what level, but instead to let the voters decide, then they should consider the following: Having made my living as a trial consultant for nearly 30 years, which includes the science of public opinion research via long-established polling methods, it is important for the results of the polling to be unambiguous. To achieve that result, the question must be unambiguous and it’s best if they require bi-polar responses, responses that are opposite one another, a “yes/no” response, for example. Better yet is if there are two questions, each requiring a bi-polar response and each being polar opposites of each other.

Mariposa, CA...Enough of the details have changed and also updated maps that have been released prompted us to do an afternoon update on the fire. We will also do one later tonight as well. The acreage increased due to an increase in fire activity late yesterday afternoon. Overnight, fire crews continued their work to establish and reinforce containment lines. The fire area is seeing poor humidity recoveries at night allowing the fire to remain very active throughout this time. The fire is burning in drought stricken chaparral and in an area of severe tree mortality. Damage assessment crews are on scene to evaluate and inspect the area. Power lines supplying power to Yosemite National Park continue to be threatened.

Posted by: thepinetree on 07/19/2017 08:47 AM
Mariposa, CA...(Update...we have spoken with the media folks in Mariposa and updated perimeter maps should be out soon.) Today, firefighters experienced extreme and aggressive fire behavior with active crowning, short- range spotting and uphill runs. The communities of Hunters Valley, Bear Valley, Catheys Valley, Mormon Bar, The Town of Mariposa , Mount Bullion, Yaqui Gulch/Aqua Fria areas and Hornitos continue to be threatened. The fire encroaches on culturally and historically sensitive areas. Traffic along HWY 149, 49N and 49S will be impacted as a result of road closures. The fire continues to threaten power lines to the south of the incident, which supply power to Yosemite National Park. Firefighters on the ground as well as aircraft are actively working to contain and suppress the fire. We ask for the public to heed all evacuation orders and warnings. For information about how to prepare for evacuation please visit: www.readyforwildfire.org.
