Chuck Hovey's Medical Recovery Fund ~Kyle Hovey

Posted by: thepinetree on 07/01/2015 09:57 AM
Murphys, CA...On June 25th at around 4:15 PM my father suffered a severe stroke that disabled the left side of his body and required his admission to the UC Davis medical center in the Neurosurgery Intensive Care Unit where he currently resides. We were incredibly fortunate to have been there for him, and we got him to the hospital within three hours of the event so that he could be administered life-saving medicine. Unfortunately, this did not do as much as the doctors had hoped and his condition worsened. The right lobe of his brain had continued to swell, and I had to give the go-ahead for a craniectomy. This is an operation that allows for pressure to be relieved in his head, but left my father without one side of his skull.

Posted by: thepinetree on 06/30/2015 11:17 AM
Sacramento, CA...The California State Board of Equalization (BOE) announces the state excise tax on gasoline will drop by six cents per gallon on July 1, 2015. This will lower the excise tax rate from 36 cents to 30 cents per gallon. “The lower rate is welcome news for overtaxed Californians who pay higher gas costs than residents of nearly every other state,” said Vice Chair George Runner. “It’s especially good timing for anyone hitting the roads this weekend.”

Rats 'Dream' Paths To A Brighter Future

Posted by: thepinetree on 06/29/2015 11:34 AM
London, UK...When rats rest, their brains simulate journeys to a desired future such as a tasty treat, finds new UCL research funded by the Wellcome Trust and Royal Society. The researchers monitored brain activity in rats, first as the animals viewed food in a location they could not reach, then as they rested in a separate chamber, and finally as they were allowed to walk to the food. The activity of specialised brain cells involved in navigation suggested that during the rest the rats simulated walking to and from food that they had been unable to reach.

And this week, after more than fifty votes in Congress to repeal or weaken this law; after a Presidential election based in part on preserving or repealing this law; after multiple challenges to this law before the Supreme Court, we can now say this for certain: the Affordable Care Act still stands, it is working, and it is here to stay.

Markleeville, CA...Hwy 4 will remain closed through the weekend but most of our high county destinations are open a largely smoke free. Firefighters on the Washington Fire, 3 miles south of Markleeville, California continued to optimize lower wind conditions to increase containment. Significant progress has been made towards containing the western flank of the fire south of Markleeville. The fire has burned 16,490 acres and is 15 percent contained. The reduction in the reported fire size is due to more accurate mapping. The fire was most active overnight and today on the southern flank west of Wolf Creek Meadows in the Carson Iceberg Wilderness.
