Sonora, CA....Sonora Regional Medical Center’s Hospice of the Sierra is offering training for anyone interested in becoming a hospice volunteer. The orientation and training session will occur on October 23, 2014 from 1 to 5pm in Sonora. Volunteers will learn how to provide support and respite care for patients and families. Governor Brown Signs Bill To Ban Plastic Grocery Bags

Sacramento, CA...Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today signed the nation’s first statewide ban on single-use plastic bags – SB 270 – aligning state law with ordinances passed by a growing number of local governments in California to reduce plastic waste. “This bill is a step in the right direction – it reduces the torrent of plastic polluting our beaches, parks and even the vast ocean itself,” said Governor Brown. “We’re the first to ban these bags, and we won’t be the last.”

Sonora, California, 9/29/14- In response to the ongoing Local State of Emergency due to drought conditions, and calls for significant reductions in water use, several organizations have come together to produce a conference called Building a Water Use Efficient Community. The free conference, open to the public, begins at 8:30 AM on Saturday, 10/18 and continues on Sunday, 10/19 in the Creekside Building, Mother Lode Fairgrounds in Sonora. Tuolumne County, CA...In May of 2014 the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office made a request to the Department of Parks and Recreation Division of Boating and Waterways for an equipment grant. I am very pleased to inform you that on September 19th , I was notified by DBW that we have been awarded an $80,000.00 grant for the purchase of a new patrol boat. Murphys, CA....Yesterday's 18th Annual Ironstone Concours d' Elegance was the largest ever. Ironstone President Steven Kautz let us know that the Ironstone Show is now the largest Concours d' Elegance in the country. With 372 entries the manicured Ironstone Vineyards grounds were a sensory feast for the eyes and ears for fans of rolling art. Best of Show went to Larry & Susan's Nannini's stunning 34 Packard Phaeton. Most Elegant Open Car Went To Leon Garoyan Davis and his 1947 Bentley VI Convertible. Most Elegant Closed Car honors went to Stockton's Tome & Terry Machado and their 1967 Lincoln Continental Limo. We try every year to get at least one shot of every entrant and multiple photos of the award winners. This year's photo album has over 700 photos. We also have video this year in regular and HD revolutions....

Calaveras County, CA....Grant Barrett has served the legal needs of the Calaveras community for the past 18 years. He has over 12 years of experience on the bench in Calaveras County. Since 2006, Grant has served our community as the Calaveras Superior Court Commissioner where he regularly presides over family law and civil disputes. From 2011 through 2013, he also served as Court Commissioner for Amador County Superior Court, at their judges’ request, until a suitable replacement could be recruited and trained. In 2013, Grant was named Judicial Officer of the Year by the Child Support Directors Association of California.

New Melones, CA...The old bridge just upstream from the Stevenot (49-bridge) has come up in conversation throughout the summer. Many of us wonder when it will be visible from the highway and others have claimed to see it while driving past. Last Friday we used Lowrance GPS and sonar to locate the old bridge. While carefully watching the map and depth finder, heading toward the bridge we were in 136' of water, the moment we crossed the bridge 108' of water and then back to 136' of water. ...

In times of water shortage with rationing, it does not make sense to drain the remaining water in our reservoirs to save fish downstream. In fact, experts note that lowering the water level can cause an increase in temperature that will potentially be harmful to juvenile fish. The plan to release water will be very hurtful to the people and especially the farmers, to say nothing about our local economy....
