Caltrans Promotes Biking & Walking Projects

Posted by: Andy_Johnson on 04/20/2014 01:52 PM
SACRAMENTO, CA ...Caltrans is asking cities and counties throughout California to submit applications for projects that promote biking and walking that will vie for a share of $360 million in federal and state funding from the state’s new Active Transportation Program – the nation’s largest.
“Today’s transportation system is about more than just highways,” said Caltrans Director Malcolm Dougherty. “Active transportation projects are a good investment and will help achieve mobility, safety, and greenhouse gas reduction goals for California.”
The program will receive about $120 million annually, so the $360 million figure announced today represents three-years of funding. Last year, Governor Brown signed legislation (Senate Bill 99, Chapter 359 and Assembly Bill 101, Chapter 354) creating the ATP, which distributes funding for human-powered transportation projects and programs. The new program replaces a patchwork of small grant programs with a comprehensive program that is more efficient. Another benefit is that funds can be directed to multi-year projects to make greater long-term improvements to active transportation.

Angels Camp, CA ... Jay Joseph Genovese, 61, said his final “Goodbyes” to friends and family at his home in Angels Camp, CA on April 13, 2014. Born Sept. 21, 1952 in Monterey, CA to Matteo Genovese and Elizabeth Schwartz, Jay’s passions were fishing and food best shared with friends and family and a good helping of laughter. The adventures of Jay and Susie, his wife and partner of 33 yrs., took them from the Sierras to the Napa Valley, a cattle ranch in North Fork, NV, to fishing in Seward, AK, to Monterey and back home to the foothills of the Sierras. He was a “Man to ride the river with”: a good man and a generous friend. In lieu of services, please plant some poppies in a place that will surprise you, make you smile and remember him.

Central Sierra Connect Broadband Consortium 2014 Regional Broadband Summit on Thursday, April 24th at the Black Oak Casino

Posted by: Andy_Johnson on 04/20/2014 11:16 AM
Tuolumne County, CA ... Central Sierra Connect Broadband Consortium cordially invites you to attend our 2014 Regional Broadband Summit on Thursday, April 24th at the Black Oak Casino Resort Conference Center, in Tuolumne County. We've put together a very informative program centered on broadband and featuring experts in the field. Technology advancements and innovations have enhanced virtually all aspects of our daily lives. We continue to see progress made in: communication, education, healthcare, entertainment, etc. and, for the most part, the price of admission is high-speed internet access, commonly referred to as broadband. Lack of availability of broadband services in rural areas such as the Central Sierra foothills leaves a significant number of residents, businesses and visitors unable to fully utilize all the internet has to offer. In addition, overall usage is growing as more of us connect to the internet, add devices and users engage in increasingly sophisticated online activities requiring additional bandwidth. We will directly address the situation at our summit and provide a forum for dialog, discussion, networking, policy planning and creation of potential solutions.

Posted by: Andy_Johnson on 04/20/2014 10:57 AM
Sonora, CA...The Stanislaus National Forest (STF) has received funding totaling $525,000 to repair and replace range infrastructure damaged or destroyed in last summer’s Rim Fire. There were 14 grazing allotments and 7 permittees affected by the Rim Fire. Each permittee has maintenance requirements for which they are responsible including fences and water systems. However, when fire or some other damage occurs the Forest Service is responsible for getting these improvements back up to standards, then maintenance responsibility returns to the permitees. Some permittees have volunteered to help with some of the repairs. Over 30 miles of Forest Service range fence will be replaced. Twelve livestock water troughs will be replaced, which also benefits wildlife such as deer and bats.

Winners will be notified by phone and posted on facebook. Why use Reusable? Over a lifetime, use of reusable bags by just one person would save over 22,000 single-use bags. In Calaveras County that is almost one billion bags! Approximately 14 million trees are cut down every year for U.S. paper bag production. A plastic shopping bag can take anywhere from 15 to 1,000 years to decompose. Paper bags produce more than double the air pollution as plastic bags in landfills. Plastic bags are a true menace to our ecosystems. Barely recyclable, almost all of the 400 plastic bags used per second in the state are discarded. Once discarded, they either enter our landfills or our marine ecosystem. Located at both of our markets, Re-Planet Recycle Centers offer full CRV (California Redemption Value) for your glass, cans and plastic. Open Tuesday - Saturday 10:00 am - 4:30 pm Closed 1:00- 1:30 pm for lunch & major holidays

Brummund Tree To Be Replaced and Rededicated April 18 At White Pines Park.

Posted by: thepinetree on 04/17/2014 03:49 PM
Arnold, CA....(Update....Murphys Nursery has graciously donated a replacement tree and a re dedication ceremony will be held tomorrow afternoon. The public is invited to arrive around 2pm and some Sacramento TV Stations are expected to arrive about 2:30pm) Our earlier story....White Pines Park Committee's Ginny Kafka was cleaning and checking on the restrooms last weekend and and noticed something very wrong. The Dogwood tree that had been planted in honor of fallen Marine Lance Cpl. Gavin R. Brummund had been torn out and thrown on the roof. Everytime she has cleaned the restrooms she has watered the young tree and watched it grow. Lance Cpl. Gavin R. Brummund was killed on June 10th, 2010 by a remotely detonated roadside bomb in Afghanistan. All of Calaveras County mourned his loss and for anyone who was a resident or in the community during the week after his death will remember like it was yesterday the thousands who lined the roads to honor his family and him as they returned to the county....

Pictured above is the uprooted tree on the roof of the restroom building at the park, L Cpl. Gavin Brummund, Son of Debbie Morris and Gregg Brummund, who was raised in Arnold CA and graduated from Bret Harte High School in 2006. The above image was taken by AP photographer David Guttenfelder of Gavin during a firefight with the Taliban in the battle for Marja in Afghanistan. This photo made numerous appearances in the national press. Below that is a photo of Gavin that was displayed at his service at Frogtown.
