The President On 70th Anniversary Commemorating the End of World War II

Posted by: thepinetree on 09/03/2015 12:43 AM
Washington, DC...Today we commemorate the 70th anniversary of the formal end of World War II in the Pacific, a conflict that tragically claimed millions of lives across Asia and Oceania and stretched several months beyond the war’s conclusion in the European theater. We salute the American servicemen and women of the Greatest Generation who answered the call of duty in the Pacific, as well as the allied forces with whom they served. We remember those who endured unimaginable suffering as prisoners of war, and we honor the ultimate sacrifice of more than 100,000 U.S. service members who laid down their lives in the Pacific theater to defend our nation and advance the cause of freedom. To them, and to the 16 million Americans who served in the Second World War -- those who are no longer with us and our proud veterans today -- our debt of gratitude can never be repaid. We live in freedom because of their brave service.

President Obama Announces New Investments to Enhance Safety and Security in the Changing Arctic

Posted by: thepinetree on 09/01/2015 08:41 AM
Anchorage, AK...The following is a White House position paper..."Climate change is reshaping the Arctic in profound ways. The global Arctic has warmed approximately twice as fast as the rest of the world, resulting in significant impacts on land and sea. Among the most noticeable changes is the retreat of Arctic sea ice, which has experienced significant, sustained declines in both extent and thickness in recent decades. This past February, the Arctic sea-ice maximum reached an all-time record low: about 1.1 million square kilometers – an area more than twice the size of California – below average. As sea-ice cover diminishes because of climate change, marine traffic is expected to increase in the Arctic, including traffic from fishing and mineral exploration to cargo shipping and tourism..

Arnold, CA...Wow, have we been blessed this summer here in the Central Sierra! No fires, no heat waves and multiple pristine lakes with plenty of water. Our beautiful, local lake, White Pines is still awesome, even though it's dropped a couple feet below the boat ramp. Paddleboarders, keep toward the beach end of the lake to protect your skegs. Lake Alpine, Utica & Union are spectacular as usual and only down a few feet from maximum. The fishing's been great at Spicer! Even though Spicer never filled this Spring, and the water line is 200-300 feet from the bottom of the ramp, it's still a massive body of water with a dramatic shoreline. We have plenty of water in our lakes and lots of options for for everyone to enjoy Labor Day weekend and beyond! This may be hard to believe, but it's true!
