Connor Slocombe Wins The 2017 National ODOR-EATERS® ROTTEN SNEAKER CONTEST®

Posted by: thepinetree on 03/29/2017 07:56 AM
New York, NY...This year seven participants from across the country worked hard to stink up their shoes for a chance to win the national title at the Odor-Eaters Rotten Sneaker Contest held at Ripley’s Believe It Or Not! Times Square. The regional winners admitted to wearing no socks, stepping in slop of all sources, and even claimed it was just their “sweet girly essence”, but only one pair of sneakers out-stunk them all and they belonged to 12-year old, Connor, from Eagle River, AK.

Orthodox Jews Protest Israel's Military Draft Law

Posted by: thepinetree on 03/29/2017 07:53 AM
Jerusalem, IL...Tens of thousands of Orthodox Jews gathered yesterday (Tuesday) to protest Israel's Military Draft Law, resulting in the forced enlistment of many Orthodox Jews. The protestors also decried Israel's brutal tactics to crack down peaceful protestors. The demonstration was organized by the Edah HaChareidis – a Rabbinic umbrella association representing hundreds of Orthodox Jewish congregations with a combined membership of over 250,000. During the protest, leading Rabbis sharply attacked Israel's conscription policy, passed in 2014, curtailing a 60 year old policy exempting all Yeshiva students from military service. Since then, many who refused to enlist were incarcerated for weeks and even months under brutal conditions. Those who peacefully protest those policies are subject to harsh punishments as well.

U.S. Census Bureau Daily Feature for March 29: Mom and Pop Businesses

Posted by: thepinetree on 03/29/2017 07:48 AM
Washington, DC...Following is the daily "Profile America" feature from the U.S. Census Bureau: Profile America — Wednesday, March 29th. While shoppers and communities often welcome the opening of a major department store or a branch of a big-box chain, they are also the cause of some concern. Small local businesses face greater competition, yet those small businesses are an outsized engine of economic growth. Additionally, they are important distinguishing features in local communities. That's why today is Mom and Pop Business Owners Day. In 2012, there were nearly 28 million business firms in the U.S., but only 5.4 million of them had paid employees. In that group, over 2.7 million-- about half-- were enterprises having four or fewer employees. Almost 10 million of America's business enterprises are women-owned. You can find current data on the country's economy by downloading the 'America's Economy' mobile application at www.census.gov/mobile.

Week Four Op-Ed By Former Calaveras County Supervisor Tom Tryon On The "War On Drugs"

Posted by: thepinetree on 03/28/2017 11:08 AM
Angels Camp, CA...Letter written to the Editor in the summer of 1985: I would like to comment on President Bush’s latest proposals for escalating the so called “War on Drugs”. One must assume this effort has been very successful to justify such an escalation! As noted in earlier articles, the effort is not a war on drugs, but, rather a war on people; a war of foreign intervention; and a war attacking the fundamental principles of liberty as embodied in the Bill of Rights. War is the lifeblood of the state. War provides for the expansion and concentration of power in a central authority, and a corresponding diminution of the individual’s power or sovereignty over his own being. The war spirit identifies dissent with treason, the pursuit of private happiness with slackerism and sabotage, and on the other side, obedience with discipline, and conformity with patriotism. Thus war removes from the individual any moral ground as well as any lawful ground on which he might resist the execution of the official plan. President Bush’s war is the more repugnant since it targets the very rights that our government was initiated to protect.

San Andreas, CA...I have been repeatedly asked about Marijuana and the safety of Calaveras citizens. Last year the voters of California chose to decriminalize possession of small amounts of marijuana and to allow the small scale cultivation of marijuana. In addition, marijuana cultivation has now become a land use issue based upon decisions by the voters and the Board of Supervisors. In 2016, the previous Calaveras County Board of Supervisors chose to allow large commercial cultivation inside of residential areas of Calaveras County through an “Urgency Ordinance.”

Stocks Turn Lower On Obamacare Survival

Posted by: thepinetree on 03/27/2017 08:02 AM
New York, NY....Stock indexes have turned lower on failure by the Republicans to pass the Obamacare replacement on Friday. The larger issue for the markets is whether this will slow down tax cuts and other plans to get the GDP rate back up to the 4% range. Even though this try failed the underlying problems with the healthcare sector are not going away. Many are now openly criticizing Republicans for not having a consensus plan in place after running, winning elections and fundraising on "Repeal & Replace". Republicans seem to be finding it harder to govern than just be the opposition.
