Calaveras Arts Council is now offering affordable art classes at the Gallery Store location at 22 N. Main Street in San Andreas. Local Calaveras artist, Libby Fife, is teaching a beginning art class on how to create a color wheel. In this one day class, you will learn to make a version of a “split” primary color chart that uses both a “cool” to “warm” version of each of the three primary colors in a your watercolor kit. You will learn how to mix a variety of primary and secondary colors as well as some lovely grays and browns (neutrals). This class is focused on the concept of creating a limited palette to use as a guide in painting or sketching. Limited palettes can help to unify your sketches and teach you about your paint properties, and are a useful compositional tool. They are great for beginning painters on the go too because there is less to carry....

The Medal of Valor is earned by employees who distinguish themselves — whether on-duty or off — through bravery or heroism above and beyond the normal demands of correctional service. The Medal of Valor is the highest honor CDCR bestows upon its employees. “This ceremony gives us an opportunity to recognize and thank some of the men and women who work tirelessly each day to protect the public’s safety,” said CDCR Secretary Jeff Beard. “Each of today’s honorees is an example of the quality of our staff. I am truly honored to lead this department, and I am very proud of the employees we are recognizing today.”

Sonora, CA...19 September 2014, at approx. 2:36 am, Officers responded to the area of the Office Bar (155 S. Washington Street) for a report of physical fight that had just ended, with an unconscious victim on the ground. When Officers arrived, they located an unconscious 26 year old male from Wi Wuk. This subject sustained major head trauma and several broken bones in his face as a result from the attack. The victim was flow to a Modesto area hospital for treatment....

Rape Suspect Arrest in Jamestown

Jamestone, CA...On Monday, 9/22/14 about 12:30 A.M. the adult female victim contacted the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office to report she had been sexually assaulted at an acquaintance’s residence in the 18000 block of 5th Avenue in Jamestown. The Sheriff’s Office initiated an investigation into the incident and a search warrant was served at the residence. The suspect, fifty one year old, Daniel Bartels, was located at the residence and arrested for the sexual assault. A search of the residence was conducted and a small amount of methamphetamine was located as well as a small quantity of small arms ammunition which Bartels is prohibited from possessing due to a prior felony conviction....

New Melones, CA....Water Conditions: New Melones Lake is currently holding 524,089 acre-feet of water. The lake level dropped just over one foot this week and is currently at 863 ft. above sea level and 215 ft. from full. The water is stained in most of the lake. There are mud lines forming near the shore throughout the day, especially on windy days. The average water temperature is 76-82 degrees. ....

CCWD Customers Reduce Water Use By 22 Percent

San Andreas, CA....The Calaveras County Water District is proud to announce that its customers are taking the drought seriously, as evidenced by a 22.2 percent reduction in water use in August 2014 when compared to August 2013. In June and July, CCWD customers reduced their water use by 12.8 and 20.8 percent, respectively, when compared to last year. These reductions are quite an accomplishment, and the District applauds its customers for exceeding a goal set by Governor Edmund G. Brown in January of this year when he declared a drought emergency and called for a 20 percent voluntary reduction in water use among Californians....

Since 2006, Grant has served our community as the Calaveras Superior Court Commissioner where he regularly presides over family law and civil disputes. Joseph M. Senn, General Building Contactor 1927-2014

Murphys, CA...Joseph M. Senn passed away suddenly on September 18, 2014, at his home in Murphys, at the age of 87. Born July 11, 1927 in French Camp, Joe grew up in Stockton. Joe served with the United States Navy on the USS Iowa until 1946. He then moved to San Andreas to assist his mother in managing the ranch located on Mountain Ranch Road. In 1952 Joe married the love of his life, Agatha M. Ott, of Manteca. He worked for Blagen Lumber Company at Toyon, until 1958 when he opened Joe's Cabinet Shop. In 1960 he obtained his General Building Contractor's license and built more than 100 homes and remodeled many throughout Calaveras County and the surrounding counties. The family lived on the ranch, in San Andreas, until 1970 and then moved to Murphys. Joe was a co-owner of Lake Alpine Lodge from 1968 to 1977....

Mokelumne Hill, CA...As September rolls on, we are all eagerly awaiting Autumn, not only for some Fall colors but to enjoy cooler temperatures. Thankfully, Deborah Marlene's Art Studio and Gallery is nice and cool inside; Fall colors are starting to show up now, too. This September, Deborah is welcoming Kate Frederick, as her "Artist Friend of the Month." Kate resides in Arnold with her husband Dave. She is a former member of the Arts of Bear Valley and in addition to Deborah Marlene's, she is currently showing her works, at the Aloft Gallery in Sonora.
