Broadway Musical Tribute Set for March 9th in Glencoe

Glencoe, CA...The Arts Committee of Northeast Calaveras County (ACNECC) has announced that its next concert of the current season will take place on Sunday, March 9, at 3 p.m. in the American Legion Hall in Glencoe, which is located on state Highway 26, nine miles east of Mokelumne Hill. The concert has been rescheduled from its earlier announced date of February 10....

The event, Regards to Broadway, will be a historical tribute to American musical theatre from the early days of Victor Herbert and George M. Cohen to more contemporary composers Andrew Lloyd Webber and Stephen Sondheim. Excerpts from such well-known and beloved musicals as Oklahoma ! and My Fair Lady will be included along with familiar and not-so-familiar songs composed by such denizens of the musical theatre as George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Kurt Weill, and Leonard Bernstein.

Performing the songs as solos, duets and ensembles will be four highly experienced and talented vocalists : Mary Peterson of Valley Springs, Julie Youngblood of San Andreas, Stevens Price of Pioneer and Marcio de Oliveira from Stanislaus State University in Turlock. The audience will be invited to join the vocalists in singing several well-known standards. Local pianist Ron Brickman will accompany and provide musical interludes.

Tickets for the event are $12 for adults and $6 for young people through high school. They are available starting February 15 at Sam Snead Real Estate on Main Street in West Point, at the General Store in Rail Road Flat, and at the door the day of the concert starting at 2:30 pm.

The American Legion Post of Glencoe has offered to open its bar serving wine, beer and mixed drinks at nominal prices before and after the show. Coffee and other refreshments will also be available.

ACNECC is a local organization composed of volunteers interested in promoting the visual and performing arts in the area of Calaveras County comprising West Point, Wilseyville, Glencoe and Rail Road Flat. The concert on March 9 is the third in the organization’s first season. Future events include a concert of popular music from the Americas featuring piano, violin and cello, scheduled for April 13 in Rail Road Flat, and an outdoor performance of the Cajun Bayou Boys Band, with an accompanying barbeque, at Lodestar Camp outside Wilseyville on May 18. For further information, contact Ron Brickman at 293-4227.
