Journalist & Teacher Scott Bruce (Scotty) Kirkpatrick Has Passed Away at 73

Murphys, CA...Scott Bruce (Scotty) Kirkpatrick, of Sheep Ranch, passed away on Memorial Day, May 28, 2018, after a battle with cancer. He was 73 years old. Scott was born in San Francisco and grew up in Murphys. He attended Calaveras High School, where he excelled at academics, music and sports. He won the Northern Californian decathlon championship and held the pole vault record for many years. He was also the Valedictorian of his graduating class. After high school, Scott joined the Army and served for four years in Fort Hood, Texas, and in Germany with the 2nd Armored Division. Upon his honorable discharge Scott received a degree from Stanislaus State University and began work as a newspaper reporter, first with the Merced Sun Star and then the Manteca Bulletin. He continued with his schooling, received a teaching credential and taught school and coached soccer for many years in Livingston, Susanville, and in the Mount Shasta area.

Scott was also a gifted musician and singer and played in a number of venues over the years, including with Club Med as an entertainer. His highlight was once opening for Crosby, Stills and Nash. In the last few years, he enjoyed playing with the musical groups in Coopers Hall in Sheep Ranch.

Scott is survived by his brother Ian, of Twain Harte, sister Jean Poshek, of Laguna Beach, numerous nephews and nieces, and his beloved canine companion, Waylon, who now happily resides on a horse ranch in Jamestown.

Donations in his memory may be made to the Calaveras County Humane Society or a charity of choice.
