Over 50 Concerned Citizens Had Their Say on Wal-Mart and other Big Box Stores
Angels Camp, CA...Both sides of the Big Box Store question had their say at this afternoon's workshop in Angels Camp. Even existing retailers in the county conceded that some additional shopping opportunities are needed in our area...
There seems to be a consensus that it would be advantageous for the City and County to have a retailer other than Wal-Mart enter our area. The challenges facing the city are how to craft a policy to attract the growth that the majority of the residents can approve of.
One novel approach that local Contractor Rod Weathers proposed was to put a distance or diversity clause in a Big Box Policy. For example if a mileage clause was included that stated that a prospective Big Box store could not have a store within say 30 miles as the crow flies.
This would tend to attract a store such as a Target while discouraging chains with existing stores in our neighboring counties. One possible outcome of this would be to promote diversity of shopping opportunities in our area.
There was not any actionable outcome of this meeting. It was however a good step towards the City discerning the interests of the community and giving them information to help them craft future policy.
