Attorney General Becerra on Multistate Comment Letter Opposing U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Proposal to Allow Refrigerant Leakage

Posted by: thepinetree on 11/16/2018 05:52 PM
Sacramento, CA...California Attorney General Xavier Becerra and Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey, leading a coalition of 16 states, have filed formal comments against the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) rollback of refrigerant management regulations that grew out of President Obama’s Climate Action Plan. The regulations ensure the safe disposal and evacuation of refrigerants from appliances such industrial air conditioners and commercial cooling equipment, diligent record-keeping, the certification of technicians, appliance maintenance, and leak repair. Venting or releasing these refrigerants and their substitutes contribute to ozone depletion and climate change - among the most severe environmental threats faced by modern human civilization.

Wildfires Emit As Much C02 As Vehicles Do In An Entire Year

Posted by: thepinetree on 11/16/2018 05:12 PM
Alexandria, VA...Large wildfires in the western United States can pump as much carbon dioxide into the atmosphere in just a few weeks as cars do in those areas in an entire year, a new study suggests. As forest fires devour trees and other plants, they release the carbon stored in the vegetation into the atmosphere. Scientists at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and the University of California used satellite observations of fires and a computer model to estimate just how much carbon dioxide is released based on the amount of vegetation that is burned. The results of the study are detailed in the online journal Carbon Balance and Management.

Posted by: thepinetree on 11/16/2018 04:29 PM
Groveland, CA...On Friday, November 16, 2018, at approximately 10:42 am, 43 year old San Francisco resident, Ioan Tudosa, was driving a 2018 Nissan Versa, westbound on State Route 120 approaching Smith Station Road at approximately 50 miles per hour, on his way back to San Francisco. At this time, an 82 year old Groveland resident was driving a 1990 Acura Integra, eastbound on State Route 120 east of Smith Station Road at an undetermined speed. Tudosa was distracted as he approached a right curve in the roadway for the intersection with Smith Station Road and diverted his attention from the roadway. During his inattention, he allowed the Nissan to travel over the solid yellow centerline, and completely into the eastbound lane, directly into the Acura's path of travel. Tudosa then noticed he was no longer in the westbound lane and steered abruptly to the right.

A cryptic revelation from Fire Investigators was that they have possibly identified a second ignition location. Firefighters worked throughout the day in all areas of the fire to continue suppression efforts while working to strengthen and improve control lines. Firefighters implemented both indirect and direct fire attack methods to make progress in containing the fire. Many portions of the fire are burning in steep and rugged terrain where direct fire attack is difficult. Established containment lines are holding and firefighters continue to patrol the interior of the fire for hot spots.

Local Contractors Encouraged to Bid on Stanislaus National Forest Snow Grooming Contract

Posted by: thepinetree on 11/14/2018 01:58 PM
Sonora, CA...Contracting officials posted a pre-solicitation notice on the Federal Business Opportunity website for snow grooming on the Calaveras and Summit Ranger districts. The notice to vendors announces the forest’s plans to post a contracting solicitation on or about Nov. 15 that will remain open for 15 days. “We are in the middle of our Travel Management, subpart C planning effort and recognize how important snowmobiling is as a recreational opportunity on the forest. A system of groomed trails is vital to providing that opportunity in a safe and sustainable way,” said Beth Martinez, Public Services staff officer for the Stanislaus National Forest. “I encourage individuals and organized user groups and clubs to help spread the word regarding the need to groom our trails and the upcoming contracting opportunity. Prospective vendors can find instructions on FedBizOpps about how to request contract announcements and prepare their bids.”
