Calaveras Fair Junior Livestock Auction Tops $377,000

Angels Camp, CA...The 2014 Junior Livestock Auction exceeded all expectations. With the assistance of the community, Junior Livestock Committee, Friends of the Fair, the 39th DAA and Kent Whittle- Student Intern; Calaveras County's young producers experienced an awesome payday. Average prices for animals were: Beef $4.14 per pound. Swine $6.35 per pound. Sheep $7.63 per pound. Goats $8.56 per pound. Poultry Pens $43.33 per pound. Poultry Broiler $62.85 per pound. Turkeys $23.12 per pound. Rabbit Pens $12.37 per pound. Rabbit Fryer $74.00 per pound. The Auction topped $377,000. It is always amazing to see this auction every year. It rivals the state fair for totals...

CCWD Completes Arnold Water Leak Repairs

Arnold, CA...Calaveras County Water District field staff repaired a leak in a water line in Arnold that caused water to be turned off in the area of Blagen Road from about 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 21. Water service is being restored to the area throughout the afternoon. Water transmission lines will be flushed and customers may experience brown water and air in their water lines. The district recommends customers turn on an outside line in order to flush their personal plumbing systems. Wait until the water runs clear, and the system should function normally....

CCWD Awards Scholarships, Moves Forward With Improvement Projects

San Andreas, CA...Calaveras High School senior Kelly Airola beamed as she accepted a $500 scholarship at the Calaveras County Water District’s board meeting Wednesday, May 14. “Thank you for this generous scholarship,” she said. “It’s a great honor and it means so much to me.” Airola earned the scholarship after her essay was selected, along with James Sommers who is a senior at Bret Harte High School, from about 30 entries. The Calaveras County Water District awards two scholarships each year to deserving students using funds from its Water Resources Education Fund. “Thank you for this scholarship,” Sommers said. “Next year I’m going to U.C. Davis and majoring in biology. Then I plan to go to dental school.” Both students read their winning essays aloud in the board room. After a round of applause, CCWD Director Jeff Davidson lauded the students for taking an interest in water. “You’re both exceptional kids and will have a great future,” he said, adding he would be pleased to see Airola and Sommers work for the water district one day...

San Andreas, CA...Calaveras High School senior Kelly Airola and Bret Harte High School senior James Sommer hold $500 scholarships awarded to them by the Calaveras County Water District at a board meeting Wednesday, May 14. Their essays about water were selected from about 30 entries. Airola plans to attend California Baptist University, where she will study engineering. Brown Jr. released a revised state budget that provides health care to millions more Californians, pays down $11 billion in debt and fully funds the teachers' retirement system over time. "This May Revision is good news for California," said Governor Brown. "It shows that California can afford to provide health care to many more people, while at the same time paying its debts and shoring up the long-troubled teachers' retirement system."

Murphys, CA...Feeney Park, the heavily used recreation area adjacent to Albert Michelson Elementary School in Murphys, has a new entrance sign thanks to a gift from Nellie Redpath, Wrangler Barnum, and Becky Reagan and their human companions. (The three canines can be seen most mornings chasing balls and frolicking with each other in the park.)
