Arnold, CA...An article authored by Nina Larson credits changes in diet with the successful treatment of hyperactivity in children. As part of a long-term study that began in 1996-1997 in the southwestern Norwegian town of Stavanger, 23 children aged four to 11 — all suffering from hyperactive disorders including ADHD — were put on milk-free and/or gluten-free diets. As a follow-up to last month’s “Operation: Stuff the Van” to support the local Food Bank, the 49’er Bullfrogs and Employee Satisfaction Teams at Mark Twain St. Joseph’s Hospital have taken on the task of collecting desperately needed items for the animals in our community. The Resource Connection of Amador and Calaveras (formerly the Human Resource Council), Calaveras County Animal Services and the Calaveras Humane Society all were recipients of the pet drive. ..

The Take It To Heart Foundation announced today that their 4th Annual Celebrity Luncheon will be held at Ironstone Vineyards at noon on May 8, 2009. The proceeds from the event will support the fight against heart disease through funding of Calaveras and Tuolumne county projects to reduce childhood obesity. .....

The Paris–Roubaix of California or The Copperopolis Road Race is in The Books ~By John Hamilton With Full Results Enclosed |

Milton-Copperopolis, CA...Potholes and Patching took the place of Cobblestones as one of the toughest single day "Classics" in California Cycling is in the books. Potential Tour de France winner Levi Leipheimer DQed which left the door open for Benjamin Jacques-Maynes of the Bissell Pro Team to take the race and Scott Nydam from the BMC Pro-Team took the second spot. Rachel Heal took home top honors in the top classification on the women's side of the race. Andrea Silva who took the great shots below mentioned how hard on equipment and riders the race was. She saw crashes, bent wheels and more but the riders just kept on going. There has been some talk of trying coax the Tour of California to make one of the stages through Calaveras County and races like this one...

San Andreas, CA...The Mark Twain St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation recently made the commitment to fund a digital mammography system for the Mark Twain St. Joseph’s Hospital in San Andreas. The digital mammography project, including necessary construction and permitting, is estimated at $840,000. The system, which provides superior detection of breast cancer in women under the age of 50, is expected to be operational this year....

San Andreas, CA...During April and May All Women in Calaveras County are eligible for a Free Lipid Panel Test. What is a lipid panel? The lipid panel is a group of tests to determine risk of coronary heart disease. They are tests that have been shown to be good indicators of whether someone is likely to have a heart attack or stroke caused by blockage of blood vessels or hardening of the arteries...
