12:00 PM Calaveras Frogs launch promo tour
The Celebrated Frogs of Calaveras County launch their annual promotional tour this weekend. Every year the amphibians hit the road to build excitement for the Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee. This year’s event is May 13-16 at Frogtown in Angels Camp. Accompanying the frogs on their promotional tour are the Calaveras Frog Wranglers, a group of volunteers dedicated to the history and community pride reflected in the 82-year-old Jumping Frog Jubilee....

First stop is a Fun Frog Jump highlighting Gold Rush Days on May 1 at the Angels Camp Museum, beginning at noon. Each participant will receive a Frog Jump ribbon.

Jackson Rancheria Casino and Hotel in neighboring Amador County is the next stop on the tour. On May 2 a Frog Jump for members of the casino’s Dreamcatchers Club will be held at the casino entrance from 1 to 3 p.m.

The Calaveras Frogs head for the State Capitol in Sacramento on May 4. At noon near the north steps of the Capitol, lawmakers and media personalities will test their frog jumping skills. The event is hosted annually by Senator Dave Cox, who represents Calaveras County.

Calaveras County employees will gather at noon on May 11 for the traditional Government Center Jump in which county departments vie in a spirited frog jumping competition.

Winners of each of these sanctioned frog jumps will appear in the Grand Finals of the Jumping Frog Jubilee at 2 p.m. on May 16 at Frogtown.

During Frog Jump the public can meet the celebrated frogs at the backstage retreat where they relax between appearances. Visitors are encouraged to enter at the rear of the Main Stage for an insight into the competitors’ training regimen.

This year’s Fair theme pays tribute to the man who started it all -- “Celebrating the Wit and Wisdom of Mark Twain.” The tale of a jumping frog he came across in Angels Camp launched Twain’s literary career in 1865 and added a colorful twist to Calaveras County’s Gold Rush history.
