05:30 PM Calaveras Teen Center Planning Meeting
Community Hopes to Open Highway 4 Teen Center

Calaveras County, CA..... A spirited grassroots group recently formed with a mission to open a teen center in Calaveras County serving youth along the Highway 4 corridor. Interested individuals are encouraged to attend the next meeting, to be held Wednesday March 23rd at the Angels Camp Union Congregational Church, 1141 S. Main St. at 5:30 p.m. “We urge teachers, students, parents, community organizations, business owners and anyone interested in this project to attend,” said Ray Malerbi, Calaveras Fairgrounds Manager.

The group first met February 22nd to discuss the needs and brainstorm ideas on how to create a teen center. At that meeting Bret Harte High School students Katlin Hinker and Rebecca Mercer gave a presentation on a survey they conducted of 544 students at the high school. “We asked if they thought there was a need for after school activities, and the response was 82.1% yes,” reported Mercer.

“The need for a teen center in this part of the county is great,” said Kathryn Eustis, Director of Youth Development and Prevention Programs for the Calaveras County Office of Education. “There are youth centers in West Point, Valley Springs and San Andreas, but nothing over here.”

The group of approximately 20 community members spoke of the need and of their personal stories. “We need a positive place for creative juices to flow and create a place where teens want to be,” said Lloyd Schneider, Minister of the Union Congregational Church in Angels Camp.

“The teen years are when kids find their identity,” expressed Tim Smith, teen health educator and local artist. “They are in turmoil, and if they don’t have something to do and a safe place to go, they can make bad decisions. So many kids are ‘in their heads’ with computers and touch screens. We need to tap into activities that help them express themselves in a positive way.”
