Writing from the Heart: Evoking and capturing meaning from your life Linda Abbott Trapp. PhD.

This workshop's emphasis will be on some of the more challenging and rewarding aspects of memoir and biographical writing: employing useful techniques to evoke memory; finding images with significant messages; learning to write about painful experiences without whining; understanding character development, including one's own; and shaping the story for clarity of meaning. We will learn guidelines for effective opening paragraphs, as well as structure and design considerations for the entire work. Beginning writers will find encouragement, and the more advanced will find insight into the elements that shape the meaning of a life and its written legacy.

Workshop Leader: Linda Abbott Trapp, PhD--A former Dean at the California School of Professional Psychology and owner of the consulting firm Abbott & Associates, Dr. Trapp is the author of seven books, including the award-winning Letters to My Granddaughters; Insights and inspiration for a life's journey, as well as more than 250 published articles, reviews, and columns. Her most recent books are available on Amazon.com. She and her husband returned to Stockton two years ago after living in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico for 5 ½ years, where she wrote three books.

Writing for the Media: Lucy Hackett

You will learn the nitty-gritty on how to promote your work and events through the news media, effective press release do’s and don’ts, and useful resources. Manzanita Writers Press

Manzanita Writers Press is a literary press serving writers and readers of the Mother Lode and Sierra region, and is an affiliate of the Calaveras County Arts Council, a nonprofit arts organization in Calaveras County. Contact us at our web site: manzanitacalifornia.org and email: mrosemanza@jps.net

Our purpose is to support a thriving literary community in our economically and culturally diverse area, networking with writing communities in our region to form a vibrant, publishing community of writers. We hold workshops, readings, critique group meetings, and as our press grows, we will publish books by emerging and seasoned writers of our foothill and Sierra region and beyond. We will continue publishing the popular Manzanita: Poetry and Prose of the Mother Lode and Sierra volumes for California readers, with volume 6 coming out soon August 14 of 2010. A wonderful anthology in the works is a new project, Wine and Cheese and Chocolate---a meal of literary food! We invite submissions of artistic and literary flash fiction, poetry, as well as elegant photographs, and art about these three culinary areas. So get out those wine tasting terms and have some fun. We would like to combine good literature and good food imagery. Deadline is Dec. 31, 2010, so get your work polished. A contest will award cash prizes and gift items in each area, along with publishing in the new anthology. Runners-up and honorable mentions will be published as well. Address queries to Linda Field, Events Coordinator, for more information, using the mrosemanza@jps.net email. Contest entry forms will be emailed to you upon request. See: Guidelines page.

Manzanita is a printed literary collection of poetry, prose, art and photography of the Mother Lode and Sierra regions of California, and we welcome work that appeals to the sensibilities of readers in our area from writers and artists across the U.S. Reserve your 2010 copy now. For a sample copy of prior issues, please contact the editor by email: mrosemanza@jps.net

The press cut its teeth on its first book in 2008, by publishing a collection of essays and poems by author Glenn Wasson, titled Tales Mark Twain Would Have Loved To Steal, which was a success in our region, mainly due to Glenn's witty style and content. Glenn's book has just won a major humor award as a notable book and is now being looked at by several agents across the U.S. We are planning on publishing more authors and invite people to become involved with our collaborative press.

Formation of the new Manzanita Writers Press, a nonprofit press formulated to do the following:
Facilitates Writers Unlimited critique group, and an affiliate of the Calaveras County Arts Council. Organizes readings and workshops. Networks with writing communities across the state.

Publishes local, regional, and other area writers, whether launching a career, or nurturing a more experienced writer. Assists selected project writers in procuring funding, editing and promotional services, and other needs of the publishing process.

Trains Volunteer Editors and staff members. Staff needs at present: Grant writers, fiscal editor, as well as advertising and sponsorship staff members. Stipends may be paid for services as funds are made available. Please contact us.
