Posted by: thepinetree on 07/11/2014 01:21 AM
Angels Camp, CA...Last Saturday morning Hwy 4 closed down to make way for a huge crowd in Arnold. We think it was the largest crowd since at least 2006 but we had several business people tell us they thought it was the largest parade crowd ever. So is Arnold back as a premier destination? Well thousands and thousands voted with their attendance in the affirmative. In our informal business survey we asked several businesses and everyone we spoke with is already up or expects to end the year up by double digits. Below we have 454 Photos and Full Parade Video. We would like to thank Cedar Creek Realty in Arnold for sponsoring our Arnold Parade Coverage Since 2006!!!!

Letter to the Editor Concerning World Population Day,

Posted by: Lea_Marie_C_Paar on 07/10/2014 10:27 PM
World Population Day, observed annually on July 11, was created by the United Nations in recognition of the need to raise awareness about the problems created by growing human populations. Not long ago, on July 11, 1987, the world's population reached Five Billion people. Today there are more than Seven Billion people and we are adding 227,000 more each day. Common sense tells us that this cannot go on forever. We are already running out of space, food, and clean water in many places the world. Indeed, climate change, and the concurrent crisis- species extinction - are the result of too many people living in disregard of earth's limits. The toll of wildlife has been devastating: species are going extinct at a rate 1,000 times greater than what is normal. 25% of ALL species are now endanger of extinction. The number one cause is habitat destruction by people. This impending huge loss of biodiversity will cost us much more than our most cherished creatures- orangutans, rhinos, elephants, tigers, pandas, etc. It will imperil the stability of the web-of-life on which we all depend....

Murphys, Ca...The Calaveras Youth Mentoring Program is pleased to honor Murphys resident Mike Ryan as its July 2014 Mentor of the Month. Mike, a seven-year resident of Forest Meadows, has been partnered with his eleven-year-old mentee, Nathan Leon, for just over a year. “Mike approaches mentoring with a wonderful enthusiasm and attention to his mentee,” said Colleen Dolan, Coordinator of Mentoring Programs for the Calaveras County Office of Education. “When I asked Mike if he wanted to mentor Nathan for a second year, his response was, ‘Whatever Nathan wants, I can do!’” Mike and Nathan both enjoy being outdoors and exploring the history of Calaveras County. The two of them have taken many trips around the area visiting Moaning Caverns and Columbia State Historic Park. “One of Nathan’s favorite things to do is to go out exploring the hills around our property on one of our ATVs,” said Mike. “And that just happens to be one of my favorite things to do too! We’re a great match.”

Central Sierra Connect is a program of the Amador-Tuolumne Community Action Agency. Our vision is to bridge the digital divide by bringing broadband to the people and the people to broadband. Right now, that vision is threatened by inaccurate information being used by decision makers in Sacramento and Washington D.C. Theft of a Beautiful Heirloom

Posted by: Lea_Marie_C_Paar on 07/08/2014 05:25 PM
Arnold, Ca...We are sad to report that our cherished heirloom flag was stolen from in front of our home during the night time hours of July 5-6. It was a lovely 4' x 8' flag with beautiful embroidered stars. It was used to drape the casket of Jen's great grandfather, a WW1 veteran. Needless to say, she is heartbroken... The flag was a big hit during the Arnold parade. Many families posed in front of it throughout the day. The thief actually cut the corners away from the flag rather than bothering to simply untie it. A blue cloth bag was found laying in the driveway where the theft took place, possibly the thief's. We know that the flag is gone forever but just wanted to show one last picture of it. Thanks, Jim and Jen in Arnold.

Posted by: thepinetree on 07/06/2014 08:08 PM
Mokelumne Hill, CA....The quaint village of Mokelumne Hill was packed on July 4th as the Annual Fourth of July Parade rolled down Main Street. It is an annual party as the extended Moke Hill family dons their red, white & blue and celebrates our nations birth and the history and community of Mokelumne Hill. This year the Grand Marshal of the parade was Mokelumne Hill's own Michael DellOrto. Not only was he the Grand Marshall but the firehouse, also known as his second home, was named in his honor. Mr. DellOrto is not only a former Calaveas County Supervisor but he has been and is a lynchpin of the community and helps keep it rolling along year after year....
