Posted by: Lea_Marie_C_Paar on 07/27/2014 08:40 PM
Mountain Ranch, Ca...The Calaveras Arts Council is pleased to bring to the foothills and MIP the original music of The Lemon Hammer. The Mountain Ranch Community Park is the place to hear this Berkeley based four-some. Music starts at 6:30 pm, but get there early and stake your ground for these fine musicians. What do you get when you mix sweet and sour mash with four former Calvin Klein models? You get The Lemon Hammer. The Lemon Hammer spins stories that span beverage metaphor, “rind bitterness to a floral bloom”. It is sweet and ripe. Their rhythms, searing leads, and soul stirring delivery blend together a sound somewhere between folk, blues, soul, pop, with the swank of original songs...

Brothers Comatose Opens Bear Valley Music Fest Tonight

Posted by: thepinetree on 07/25/2014 04:32 PM
Bear Valley, CA....Literal brothers, Alex (banjo and vocals) and Ben Morrison (guitar and vocals) of The Brothers Comatose grew up in a house that was known for its music parties. “The Morrison house was a gathering place for local musicians – everyone would bring an instrument, call out tunes, call out changes, and just play for hours” says Brothers Comatose bassist and Morrison music party goer, Gio Benedetti. “I learned more in that living room than in any class I ever took.” The brothers took this generous, inclusive and rowdy attitude and brought it to stages all over San Francisco. With the addition of members Philip Brezina (fiddle) and Ryan Avellone (mandolin) the string quintet brings their original string music and the feel of an intimate music party to audiences all across the United States...

Yosemite July Lightning Fire Update #1

Posted by: Lea_Marie_C_Paar on 07/25/2014 12:17 AM
Yosemite, Ca...Since July 14, Yosemite National Park has experienced over 3,000 lightning strikes with more than 21 fire starts. Multiple thunderstorms, accompanied by rain, have put out or temporarily slowed activity and growth. Most fires are between 8000’ and 9000’ elevation. They are small, creeping and smoldering surface fires or single logs less than 1/10 of an acre and are showing minimal activity. Of 1,004 fires above 8,000’ since 1930, 941 never got to be 10 acres. Most of these fires have few values at risk an pose little threat to people or park infrastructure. As the weather warms and fuels dry out it is likely other fires will be found. All fires are being monitored by fire crews. Fires Managed for Multiple Objectives: Yosemite fire management is developing strategies for these fires and depending on risk assessment; most of these current fires will be naturally extinguished. Fire crews will utilize natural barriers of granite, streams or open ground to manage fires. The Fire Management Plan allows the park to manage any fire outside of the suppression unit....

2014 Vineyard Tour & BBQ - “The Grape to the Glass Tour” On July 25th

Posted by: Lea_Marie_C_Paar on 06/27/2014 11:17 AM
Murphys, Ca....This year’s tour will involve discussions with the vineyard manager AND the winemakers at each vineyard to help our guests understand how a premium wine is created from the vineyard to the bottle and the important steps that need to occur along the way. It is our desire to show the importance of the relationship between the grower and ther winery and how their dialogue sets the stage for high-quality wine production. As usual, the Vineyard Tour is an educational program that allows wine industry members as well as the general public to visit many of the Calaveras vineyards which contribute to the rise of the impact of region on the wine-drinking world. At each stop there will be discussions about every aspect of vineyard operations that affect wine-quality and land stewardship with topics ranging  from pest management, irrigation, fertilization, cover-croping, canopy management and other cultural practices. A general wrap-up of the day will be given by our guest specialists at the evening BBQ. Our guest specialist, Glenn McGourty, is a seasoned expert in Organic and Biodynamic Winegrape production with a down-to-earth and practical approach to farming. Tour Specialist Lynn Wunderlich represents UCCE in the Central Sierra region and las worked tirelessly to help Foothill growers make their mark on the California wine map. The vineyard tour registration fee is $25/person and includes lunch. You may drive your own car or shuttle service is available for an additional $30 per person (limited to 24 passengers). Since we will be pouring tastings at several vineyards and due to restricted access to some vineyards, we strongly recommended everyone take the bus. If you will be following in your own car and plan to taste wine, please have a designated driver...
