Sonora Pass Closed For Winter... Ebbetts Pass Closed but May Reopen!

Alpine, Tuolumne, Mono and Inyo Counties – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) announces the seasonal closure of Sonora Pass (SR-108) due to accumulations of snow and ice on this route.

To avoid potential plumbing and sewer disasters, Groveland Community Services District, Jamestown Sanitary District, Tuolumne City Sanitary District, Tuolumne County Solid Waste Department, Tuolumne Utilities District, Twain Harte Community Services District and Waste Management would like to remind residents how to properly dispose of fats, oils and grease. Sewer blockages can cause backups into homes resulting in an unpleasant mess that can cost hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars to clean up.

Sonora, CA...Friday, 24 November 2017, will be the 34th annual Christmas Parade. This event will bring thousands of visitors to downtown Sonora. Several streets will be closed before and during the parade including parts of State Route 49. People need to plan ahead if they are attending the parade or trying to get through town during the parade. Detours will be posted for those streets which will be closed. The following are the major street and highway closures before and during the parade;
• South Washington Street at State Route 108 will be closed at Hospital Road at 5:30 PM.
• North and South Washington Street (State Route 49) will be closed at 5:30 PM.
• Stockton Road (State Route 49) at Green Street will be closed at 5:30 PM.
• Snell Street at Bonanza Street will be closed at 5:30 PM.
• School Street between Washington Street (State Route 49) and Snell Street will be closed at 3:30 PM.

Sonora, CA...On November 20th, just after 8:00 A.M., Sonora Police Officers responded to Safeway (1291 Sanguinetti Road) for a report of a theft in progress. While en route, officers were advised two African American male adults exited the store with bags of stolen merchandise and got into a dark colored sedan, possibly a Toyota. Chief VanderWiel spotted a vehicle matching the description traveling westbound on Highway 108. Chief VanderWiel conducted a traffic stopped and detained the occupants, who also matched descriptions given to officers.

Angels Camp, CA...Raymond Douglas Davis born September 29, 1921 in Port Arthur, Texas, passed away at his residence in Angels Camp, CA., on November 14, 2017, he was 96 yrs. old. Ray married lillian Amolene Wise in 1941 and they were married for over 70 years. He was a World War II Veteran and was a member of the Carpenter’s Union for 61 years.

Sonora, CA... The fire restrictions in high hazard areas have been terminated as of Nov. 20, 2017. The Stanislaus National Forest enacted the temporary fire restrictions on July 20. Arnold, CA...On Thursday, November 30, 2017 at 6pm at Independence Hall in Arnold, Dr. Randall Smart, Executive Director of the Mark Twain Health Care District will address residents of Ebbetts Pass on the state of health care in Calaveras County. Dignity Health’s current contract with the district expires in 2019. The health care district will decide between three options which include remaining with Dignity Health or another affiliate, choosing to operate the hospital independently or with a management-of-services agreement. All voters are requested to attend, if possible, as the district’s decision becomes an election issue in 2018 for the Calaveras registrant.

Border Patrol Agent from Big Bend Sector Killed in Line of Duty

Washington, DC...A U.S. Border Patrol agent has died as a result of injuries sustained while on patrol in the Big Bend Sector. Agent Rogelio Martinez and his Big Bend Sector partner were responding to activity while on patrol near Interstate 10, in the Van Horn Station area. Agent Martinez’s partner reported that they were both injured and in need of assistance. Responding agents provided immediate medical care, and transported both agents to a local hospital.

Bakersfield, CA...Inmate Charles Manson, 83, died of natural causes at 8:13 p.m. on Sunday, November 19, 2017, at a Kern County hospital. Inmate Manson was admitted to state prison from Los Angeles County on April 22, 1971, for seven counts of first-degree murder and one count of conspiracy to commit murder for the August 1969 deaths of Abigail Ann Folger, Wojciech Frykowski, Steven Earl Parent, Sharon Tate Polanski who was eight months pregnant, Jay Sebring, Leno La Bianca and Rosemary La Bianca.

Inmate Death at Mule Creek State Prison Under Investigation

Ione, CA...Mule Creek State Prison (MCSP) officials are investigating the death of an inmate as a possible homicide. Inmate Wayne Bradley, 50, was found unresponsive in his cell at approximately 2:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 18. Custody and medical staff immediately responded, but Bradley was pronounced dead at the scene. Prison officials have named Bradley’s cellmate, Everett McCoy, 35, as a suspect.

Another Vehicle vs Pedestrian Collision in Sonora Area

Sonora, CA...On Friday, November 19th, just after 7 p.m., the Sonora Police Department responded to a vehicle vs. pedestrian collision in the 300 block of Stockton Street. It was determined that a 2004 red Honda SUV, driven by a 47-year-old Sonora woman, was traveling eastbound on Stockton Road and had struck a 38-year-old man also from Sonora. The male was crossing Stockton Road from north to south outside of any marked crosswalk when the collision occurred.

Minor Injuries in DUI Collision on Hwy 49

Sonora, CA...On November 18, 2017 at approximately 2352 hours, Michael A. Newton of Twain Harte was driving a black 2009 Ford Crown Victoria northbound on State Route 49 south of Jack Page Road. Theodore J. Phelan of Sonora was driving a white 1992 Jeep Cherokee southbound on State Route 49 approaching Jack Page Road. Due to his high level of alcohol intoxication, Mr. Phelan crossed the double yellow lines and drove wrong-way into the northbound lane. Mr. Newton noticed the Jeep crossing into his lane so he slowed and moved his vehicle to the right shoulder.
