In response to the Calaveras Unified School Districts proposal to cut music and sports programs in order to shrink budget deficits, a group of parents, teachers, students, alumni and volunteers have launched the Calaveras Save Campaign. The Calaveras Save Campaign, organized by the Calaveras Youth Organization and under the advisement of the Calaveras Community Foundation as a donor advised fund, is to ensure the future of music and performing arts education in Calaveras Unified School District.....

Michelle has taught in the district for 27 years and currently teaches first grade at Michelson Elementary. We spoke about their recent endorsement of Ali Heermance, Colby Barker, and Tom Pratt in the upcoming election for seats on the VUSD Board. We were able to speak with Mr. Pratt & Mr. Barker about their reasons for running. Ali Heermance was on a field trip and we will catch up with her soon. Update...this is updated information on the earlier bomb threat. It appears that the man involved has threatened to blow up his home. It has also been reported that he poured gasoline on himself and threatened to light himself on fire. A threat of self-immolation in Valley Springs is thankfully not something we have often...or ever. (Update...Initial reports are a peaceful outcome and one in custody!) Great work by all our law enforcement agencies!!

Arnold, CA...I want to share some key thoughts about the Supervisor race for District 3.  I urge all voters to stand behind Supervisor Merita Callaway and give her a strong mandate of approval for the future.  We have lived in Calaveras County for 34 years. I'm a real estate broker and have been in real estate for 30 years. Whenever an issue came up that affected our County, town, or real estate in general, I was always able to contact Merita and get her help.  A good case in point was the speed limit increases that Caltrans made which had a negative impact on our downtown.  Merita became involved and worked directly with Caltrans and the Highway Patrol to make the needed changes....

Arnold & Murphys, CA....Scheduled construction work for the Week of October 20-24: Monday (October 20), the contractor will be paving intersections and driveways throughout the 22-mile project; Tuesday through Friday (October 21-24), the contractor will be working on intersections, shoulders and striping throughout the project. The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will perform one-way traffic control on State Route 4 from Main Street/Douglas Flat to Meko Drive for paving. San Jose, CA...Firefighters will gather together to pay their respects to Airtanker Pilot Geoffrey “Craig” Hunt as well as to his family, who paid the ultimate sacrifice with his life while fighting the Dog Rock Fire near El Portal, California. A celebration of Craig’s life, with full Line of Duty Death fire service honors, will take place Tuesday, October 21, 2014 at 10 a.m. On October 7, 2014, Dyncorp Pilot Geoffrey “Craig” Hunt was involved in a fatal crash while flying a CAL FIRE S-2T Airtanker over the Dog Rock fire burning near Yosemite’s Arch Rock. “We continue to mourn the tragic loss of Craig.” said Chief Ken Pimlott, CAL FIRE Director. “We know wildland firefighting is an inherently dangerous job, but Craig made the ultimate sacrifice.”

Since 2006, Grant has served our community as the Calaveras Superior Court Commissioner where he regularly presides over family law and civil disputes. From 2011 through 2013, he also served as Court Commissioner for Amador County Superior Court, at their judges’ request, until a suitable replacement could be recruited and trained. Burson, CA...Sheriff Detectives have conducted multiple interviews regarding the shooting that was reported to have occurred on Highway 12 near Burson Road on 10/15/2014. The victim in the case has provided a new statement indicating that the shooting actually occurred on a gravel road accessed off of South Burson Road. Murphys, CA...Just a reminder that we have our fundraising event at Rob's Place in Murphys tonight from 6pm to 9pm, come support your theatre group in raising funds for our spring production. We still have not decided on the production yet due to limited funds so every penny counts. Most rights for a great musical run aroound $1,400.00 so we have a ways to reach that by January and with you coming tonight will make a huge difference. Angels Camp, CA...The City of Angels Camp City Council will reconvene it's Regular Monthly Meeting on Tuesday, October 21st at 6pm. This is a continuance of the meeting that was scheduled for October 7th. Due to the large attendance of that meeting they voted to hold it at the Bret Harte Theatre next week. The main agenda item is a Public Hearing involving a General Plan Amendment/Rezone for Mark Twain Medical Clinic located at 170 Dogtown Road in Angels Camp. Full agenda is enclosed...
