Posted by: thepinetree on 08/01/2014 05:40 PM
San Andreas, CA....On 07/24/14 Corporal Alan Serpa and Deputy James Shackelford received an Attorney General’s Certificate of Commendation from California State Attorney General Kamala Harris for acts of bravery. On August 8, 2013, the two deputies responded to a structure fire at a residence on the 8000 block of Mountain Meadows Drive, in Mountain Ranch. Upon their arrival, the deputies were told that two people were trapped inside the fully engulfed structure. Corporal Serpa and Deputy Shackelford immediately entered the structure, without any fire gear, and encountering heavy smoke and extreme temperatures, without concern for their own safety. Reaching the room where the individuals were last seen, Corporal Serpa and Deputy Shackelford continued calling their names in an attempt to locate and save them. The bedroom door was hot and smoking, so the deputies decided to breach a wall, using a shovel that they had found in a garage. Inside, searching on their hands and knees, they withstood intense smoke and heat, and faced an encompassing fire...

Yosemite El Portal Fire Update. 4,198 Acres, 58% Contained, 1,360 Personnel

Posted by: thepinetree on 08/01/2014 12:49 PM
Yosemite, CA...Last night crews conducted burnout operations on the northwest flank of the fire; this tactic is used to slow the progression of the fire by starving it of fuels. Conditions were very favorable and the crews made considerable progress. On the lower portion of the fire, crews continued mopping up, securing the containment line, and removing trash and equipment no longer in use. The weather forecast calls for hot and dry conditions for the entire fire area today with a strong potential for spot fires outside the fire perimeter. Plenty of resources are in place to address this concern. Today burnout operations will continue as long as conditions are favorable. Crews will continue to mop up and secure the containment line. The evacuation that was in place in Foresta will be lifted at 3:00 P.M., and only residents will be allowed to enter the area. Complete details are enclosed....

GAO Not Kind To CMS's Price Tag Now Tops $840 Million

Posted by: thepinetree on 07/31/2014 11:23 PM
Washington, DC... The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) undertook the development of and its related systems without effective planning or oversight practices, despite facing a number of challenges that increased both the level of risk and the need for effective oversight. CMS officials explained that the task of developing a first-of-its-kind federal marketplace was a complex effort with compressed time frames. To be expedient, CMS issued task orders to develop the federally facilitated marketplace (FFM) and federal data services hub (data hub) systems when key technical requirements were unknown, including the number and composition of states to be supported and, importantly, the number of potential enrollees. CMS used cost-reimbursement contracts, which created additional risk because CMS is required to pay the contractor's allowable costs regardless of whether the system is completed. CMS program staff also adopted an incremental information technology development approach that was new to CMS. Further, CMS did not develop a required acquisition strategy to identify risks and document mitigation strategies and did not use available information, such as quality assurance plans, to monitor performance and inform oversight....

Ebbetts Pass Fishing Report

Posted by: Lea_Marie_C_Paar on 07/30/2014 03:23 PM
Ebbetts Pass, Ca...Welcome to Ebbetts Pass Sporting Goods report on fishing and what's working at all our favorite spots along the Highway 4 corridor -- Come and fish our Highway 4 corridor. With the exception of Spicer Reservoir. all of our lakes, rivers and streams are at normal levels. Don.t miss the opportunity to fish our beautiful scenic highway and enjoy camping along your favorite stream or lake. We look forward to seeing you soon. As of now we have fires in our area and smoke free. We have been experiencing a complete crash of our fishing license computer system. It has hit all of California and will not be up and running at our store until they get the system up and running. No idea when this will happen. You can go on line with our Department Of Fish and Wildlife website. Follow the directions and this will let you purchase your license. You can also go to our website and go to fishing resources and click the tab Take Me Fishing. When the tab opens click on the Fishing tab and look for the Get A License tab in upper right hand corner then click on this tab and it will walk you through the steps to purchase a fishing license on line. Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused, but it was not our fault. Fishing on the Highway 4 corridor has been good fishing. With our rivers experiencing lower than normal water levels, people should try their hand at fly fishing. Stop by our store on how to benefit from low water levels either from a fly rod or a spinning rod. It is not only fun but challenging to fool a trout with a fly....
