Nature’s Mountain Snowpack “Reservoir” Still Lacking; Third Manual Survey Confirms Shrinking Water Content

Posted by: thepinetree on 03/04/2015 07:53 AM
Sacramento, CA...The Sierra Nevada snowpack, which Californians rely on heavily during the dry summer months for their water needs, continues to disappoint this winter. Despite the snowfall in the Sierra Nevada Range over the weekend that gladdened ski and snowboard enthusiasts, it was not enough to offset weeks with no snow at all. Today’s manual survey by the Department of Water Resources (DWR) at the Phillips snow course in the mountains 90 miles east of Sacramento found 0.9 inches of water content in the snow, just 5 percent of the March 3 historical average for that site. Electronic readings by the Department of Water Resources (DWR) today indicate the water content of the northern Sierra snowpack is 4.4 inches, 16 percent of average for the date. The central and southern Sierra readings were 5.5 inches (20 percent of average) and 5 inches (22 percent) respectively. Statewide, 103 electronic sensors found today’s snow water equivalent to be 5 inches, 19 percent of the March 3 multi-decade average. When DWR conducted the season’s first two manual surveys on December 30 and January 29, the statewide water content was 50 percent and 25 percent respectively of the historical averages for those dates. The snowpack’s water content this year is historically low for early March. Only in 1991 was the water content of the snowpack lower – 18 percent of that early-March average. Manual surveys of 180 snow courses this year reveal even less water content – just 13 percent of the early-March average, the lowest in DWR’s records for this time of year. The difference between electronic and manual surveys is explained by the higher elevation of most electronic sensors, where they receive more snow than manyof the lower-elevation snow courses...

Whiskerino...More than just a Tradition!

Posted by: thepinetree on 03/03/2015 09:26 AM
Frogtown, USA...Whiskerino Dinner and Dance- April 11. The Friends of the Calaveras County Fair and the Junior Livestock Committee are hosting a Hoe-down, Show-down. The Whiskerino Dinner Dance is planned for April 11. The dinner dance will be the official kick-off event leading up to the Calaveras County Fair & Jumping Frog Jubilee May 14-17. The Whiskerino has a fine historic tradition in Calaveras County. Although the Whiskerino dates back to the 1940s it was revitalized in the 1950's and held for the next forty years. In 1955 Bob Petithome, Angels Camp resident, won the award for best full beard. He says the best part of the event was seeing "all the slick chins" try to grow beards. The event marked the month long Jubilee . Originally held at the Gun Club adjacent to the Fairgrounds, men and women donned their best gold rush attire. However the biggest draw was the actual whisker competitions....

Murphys, CA...Murphys Nursery has taken their 27 years of experience and expanded their online presence with Of course we applaud everything tech related in our area and we thought it very, very cool and potentially lucrative for them to expand in this area. From "We have collected an extensive variety of suppliers and growers of rare and unusual plants during the 27 years our garden center has been in business. Our retail business is located near a service station in a much visited nook of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Over the years, while fueling their vehicles, many people, from all over the United States, have come to our garden center to visit and stretch their legs. The most often heard remark from these visitors is some version of “I can’t believe the selection you offer here. Our local garden center closed and now all the big box chains offer the same few plants.” We knew we had quite a selection, but we didn’t know how unusual our offerings were. So we started looking online to discover that we had many selections that were not available or could offer the ones that were at a better price..

Posted by: thepinetree on 03/02/2015 07:04 AM
Washington, DC...Hi everybody. In America, we believe that a lifetime of hard work and responsibility should be rewarded with a shot at a secure, dignified retirement. It’s one of the critical components of middle-class life – and this week, I took new steps to protect it. Six years after the crisis that shook a lot of people’s faith in a secure retirement, our economy is steadily growing. Last year was the best year for job growth since the 1990s. All told, over the past five years, the private sector has added nearly 12 million new jobs. And since I took office, the stock market has more than doubled, replenishing the 401(k)s of millions of families...
