Union Congregational Church to host local Cancer Moonshot Summit - June 29th

Posted by: thepinetree on 06/24/2016 11:12 AM
Angels Camp, CA...The following is comments from Karen Rojas addressing the City Council on the Summit. "Even though it’s not on the agenda, thank you for allowing me to have 3 minutes to speak on a grave matter that does affect Angels Camp. I cannot imagine that there is a single person in this room whose life or that of a loved has not been impacted by cancer. President Nixon declared the War on Cancer back in the 70s and although there have been successes, the Standard of Care - surgery, radiation, and chemo - has not “cured” cancer. If it was 1 in a 1,000 40 years ago and will soon be 1 in 5, it’ll hit 1 in 2 for our grandchildren. For decades, cancer has baffled scientists and experts around the globe, claiming over 8 million lives worldwide in 2012 alone. Numbers of newly-diagnosed cancer cases are expected to rise by 70% over the next 20 years.

Supreme Court Terminates Texas Abortion Access Law ~ Opinion Of Court By Justice Breyer

Posted by: thepinetree on 06/27/2016 07:49 AM
Washington, DC...In Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pa. v. Casey, 505 U. S. 833, 878 (1992), a plurality of the Court concluded that there “exists” an “undue burden” on a woman’s right to decide to have an abortion, and consequently a provision of law is constitutionally invalid, if the “purpose or effect” of the provision “is to place a substantial obstacle in the path of a woman seeking an abortion before the fetus attains viability.” (Emphasis added.) The plurality added that “[unnecessary health regulations that have the purpose or effect of presenting a substantial obstacle to a woman seeking an abortion impose an undue burden on the right.” Ibid .

Murphys, CA...Born high upon the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in Northern California, The Little Fuller Band is a highly energetic and refreshing change of pace from your usual folk band. These young performers have a sound that is something very much alive and growing rapidly. Combining influences from americana, bluegrass, country, folk, gypsy, punk and rock & roll, with a focus on heavily rhythmic use of traditional string instruments, every song breathes with its own unique dynamic, sound and velocity. Their music is naturally energetic, an energy that is compounded by their magnetism and presence on stage. Their writing creates an ever-changing style that blends seamlessly with powerful lyrics that touch on subjects ranging from political to playful. A familiar sound with a breath of fresh air, The Little Fuller Band is something you don’t want to miss.

President Obama's Weekly Address : Designating Stonewall National Monument

Posted by: thepinetree on 06/25/2016 11:11 AM
Washington, DC...Hi everybody. The story of America is a story of progress. It’s written by ordinary people who put their shoulders to the wheel of history to make sure that the promise of our founding applies not just to some of us – but to all of us. Farmers and blacksmiths who chose revolution over tyranny. Immigrants who crossed oceans and the Rio Grande. Women who reached for the ballot, and scientists who shot for the moon. The preachers, and porters, and seamstresses who guided us toward the mountaintop of freedom.

Estate Sale to Benefit the Diana J. White Cancer Institute

Posted by: thepinetree on 06/14/2016 08:23 AM
Sonora, CA...An estate sale will be held at the home of George and Diana White, June 24, 25 and 26, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 19279 2nd Garrotte Road in Groveland. Proceeds will benefit the Diana J. White Cancer Institute at Sonora Regional Medical Center. Last year, George White gave a generous estate gift in honor of his late wife, Diana. The gift, estimated at over $3 million, was directed to benefit the Cancer Center at Sonora Regional Medical Center. At the time of his gift, White said, “I am happy to make this estate gift to the hospital in her memory because I know it will help people in our community. That would have made Diana very happy.” To honor and recognize their substantial contribution, the Cancer Center will be renamed the Diana J. White Cancer Institute when it moves to its new location in the Medical Center’s Pavilion, scheduled to open in 2017.
