An opportunity to work: Community Support, How Local Businesses Support The Arc’s Work Crews

Posted by: Lea_Marie_C_Paar on 07/22/2014 01:46 PM
Amador County, Ca....Work crews at the Arc are paid group work opportunities in the community. All workers earn minimum wage and gain the skills needed to prepare them for individual job placements within the community. Crew members are held to a high standard. They must arrive to work on time, come dressed in crew attire, follow directions and follow safety rules and regulation set forth by each company we work for. In the past work crews use to use two vans and two trailers for recycling crews during the summer months. This year we purchased a 2004 Dodge Ram truck, eliminating the use of two vans down to one truck. This has been great for day programs as now they have the use of all their vans for classes and outings. Not only did the purchase of the truck increase the opportunity for campus outings in both Amador and Calaveras, but it saves the Arc money on a weekly basis. “We’re very proud of the new work crew truck,” said Director of Supported Employment Ileshia Knigge. “It bring cost saving strategy, keeps our day program vans clean, and consumers are very proud of it, it was a great decision and I’m happy our Executive Director and Board of Directors supported the purchase.”...

Summer Storms Mean Beautiful and Powerful Displays of Nature

Posted by: Lea_Marie_C_Paar on 07/22/2014 12:59 PM
Bear Valley and Lake Alpine, Ca... This past weekend, as many experienced, there were quite the summer storms occurring. While the rain was welcome, the lightning made everyone wary. However, for a couple of visitors to our beautiful area, the lightning made for a fantastic photo op. Ryan Schill, from Cupertino, captured an amazing lightning strike while staying at cabin in Bear Valley, and reported that the rain quickly put out the fire that the lightning started. Rachael Manners was staying in a cabin in Pacific Valley, and drove to Lake Alpine, where she was able to snap a few photos of the lightning storm above the mountains. Check out these beautiful photos by talented young photographers!

Beating the Heat in the Gold Country - Huffington Post "In The Gold Country" Feature

Mokelumne Hill, Ca - The Hotel Leger, a few hours out of the Bay Area, hasn't changed all that much from the gold rush. And local bands in the bars on weekend are probably a tradition as old as the hotel. I have to admit, for those of us who live any reasonable distance off of Main Street, after awhile you learn to either enjoy it, wander over for a glass of wine to check it out, or on "open mike" night, put Pandora on your TV at home and turn it up a bit. It's okay. We support it around here. We love our old hotel. But on Sundays during the summer, between 1 and 4, we throw our windows open. Or work in the garden. Or wander over to the hotel for a pulled pork sandwich. Sunday afternoons are Blues and Barbecue at the hotel....

2014 Vineyard Tour & BBQ - “The Grape to the Glass Tour” On July 25th

Posted by: Lea_Marie_C_Paar on 06/27/2014 11:17 AM
Murphys, Ca....This year’s tour will involve discussions with the vineyard manager AND the winemakers at each vineyard to help our guests understand how a premium wine is created from the vineyard to the bottle and the important steps that need to occur along the way. It is our desire to show the importance of the relationship between the grower and ther winery and how their dialogue sets the stage for high-quality wine production. As usual, the Vineyard Tour is an educational program that allows wine industry members as well as the general public to visit many of the Calaveras vineyards which contribute to the rise of the impact of region on the wine-drinking world. At each stop there will be discussions about every aspect of vineyard operations that affect wine-quality and land stewardship with topics ranging  from pest management, irrigation, fertilization, cover-croping, canopy management and other cultural practices. A general wrap-up of the day will be given by our guest specialists at the evening BBQ. Our guest specialist, Glenn McGourty, is a seasoned expert in Organic and Biodynamic Winegrape production with a down-to-earth and practical approach to farming. Tour Specialist Lynn Wunderlich represents UCCE in the Central Sierra region and las worked tirelessly to help Foothill growers make their mark on the California wine map. The vineyard tour registration fee is $25/person and includes lunch. You may drive your own car or shuttle service is available for an additional $30 per person (limited to 24 passengers). Since we will be pouring tastings at several vineyards and due to restricted access to some vineyards, we strongly recommended everyone take the bus. If you will be following in your own car and plan to taste wine, please have a designated driver...

CDCR Partners with San Francisco Sheriff for New Reentry Facility

Posted by: Lea_Marie_C_Paar on 07/21/2014 12:30 PM
Sacramento, Ca —The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) signed a contract with the San Francisco County Sheriff to launch a pilot program to provide transitional services to state inmates immediately before their scheduled release. This program will help improve the inmates’ prospects for rehabilitation. The county-owned Secure Reentry Program Facility, adjacent to the county jail, will house up to 56 male prison inmates whose sentences are almost up and are scheduled to return to San Francisco County within 60 days. The county will provide rehabilitative services such as education, pre-employment training, housing assistance, mental health and medical services, and substance abuse treatment. “We must be innovative in meeting the needs of offenders if we are going to reduce the number of those caught in the cycle of incarceration,” CDCR Secretary Jeffrey Beard said. “This partnership is a progressive step toward connecting inmates with local services and meeting those needs.” In 2013, the Legislature approved up to $5.4 million for CDCR to partner with select counties to connect offenders with local services that are proven to help successful reintegration into society, including securing identification cards and enrollment in health programs such as Medi-Cal. “The San Francisco Sheriff’s Department is proud to be part of this unique partnership that enables us to create the Reentry Pod and amplify what it means to hold both the criminal justice system and those within our custody accountable toward the goal of reducing recidivism.” San Francisco Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi said. “The Reentry Pod is not only about the rigor we put inmates through to prepare themselves for release, but to challenge our local approach to not throw away people once they leave our custody.”...

Sacramento, Ca – The California State Board of Equalization (BOE) adopted a regulation to implement the Manufacturing and Research & Development Equipment Partial Sales and Use Tax Exemption during a public hearing on July 17, 2014. The regulation applies to equipment used primarily in manufacturing or research and development. This is part of the Governor’s Economic Development Initiative which provides tax exemptions and credits to qualified businesses to promote business expansion and job growth in California. Prior Board votes on this topic initiated the rulemaking process, and further clarified the Board’s view of the types of businesses and purchases that qualify for the exemption which took effect on July 1, 2014. The Board also adopted the assessment rolls for private rail cars and publicly owned private utilities, and heard a report on the Private Railroad Car Tax Rate that will be used to assess property taxes on private rail cars during the 2014-15 fiscal year.

Calaveras Public Health & Health Care District Partner for Prevention

Posted by: Lea_Marie_C_Paar on 07/18/2014 09:21 PM
Calaveras Public Health Services has announced approval of a $20,000 funding contract from the Mark Twain Health Care District to continue providing Healthier Living Chronic Disease Self-Management Workshops. The workshop model was developed by Stanford University to build the skills needed to manage chronic or ongoing health conditions. The workshop leaders are Community Health Workers trained and certified to conduct the workshops. “The strength of our workshops is that we have identified non-medical people from the community who also have chronic conditions and receive training to conduct the workshops,” stated Dr. Dean Kelaita, Calaveras Health Officer. “They understand the challenges of managing a health problem that is ongoing,” Kelaita added. The workshops are not specific to a medical condition. The self-management skills can apply to any ongoing health problem like diabetes, high blood pressure, depression, high cholesterol, cancer, or arthritis. The workshops are currently funded through the Public Health Institute through a federal Community Transformation Grant that will end in September 2014. The new funding will prevent a gap in workshop services that are offered at no-cost to adults in the County.

To Our Arnold Friends On Bear Incident In Arnold This Morning

Posted by: thepinetree on 07/18/2014 06:03 PM
Arnold, CA....This morning a big bear was struck on Hwy 4 about 200 yards into the passing lane before Arnold. The bear rolled into a ravine on the north side. We watched her for a while and she recovered. Then we heard something like goats from the south side of Hwy 4. There were 2 cubs treed. With the help of my neighbors, we shut down the Hwy for perhaps 90 seconds and reunited the family. I want to thank people for caring ..Doug Dryer
