Black Mass Review: Gangster’s Paradise? ~ By Brett Bunge

Posted by: thepinetree on 10/06/2015 12:08 PM
Hollywood, CA...Near the beginning of Black Mass, Johnny Depp, portraying Boston crime boss James “Whitey” Bulger, tells his young son that he should only “punch someone when no one is looking.” It’s an apt statement to describe the elder Bulger, who lingers in the background until it’s time to strike. It also applies to the film itself, which—while flawed—is a dark and understated crime drama that concerns itself with backroom dealings, shady meetings, and at times, shocking violence, most of it committed by Bulger himself.

Presidential Weekly Address: Congress Should Do its Job and Pass a Serious Budget

Posted by: thepinetree on 10/03/2015 11:32 AM
Washington, DC... Hi, everybody. Yesterday, we learned that our businesses created another 118,000 new jobs in September. That makes 67 straight months of job creation, and 13.2 million new jobs in all. But we would be doing even better if we didn’t have to keep dealing with crises in Congress every few months. And especially at a time when the global economy is softening, our own growth could slow if Congress doesn’t do away with harmful austerity measures.

The 2015 Grape Stomp Is Saturday! Many Of The Proceeds To Benefit Butte Fire Victims & Non-Profits

Posted by: thepinetree on 10/01/2015 02:46 PM
Murphys, CA ~ The Calaveras Winegrape Alliance joins with all of Calaveras County in thanking the firefighters and emergency personnel, many of whom are still on the job or on fire lines, for their heroic efforts in fighting the Butte Fire. Like everyone, we mourn for the lives taken by all the fires, and the loss of homes and property suffered by so many. We are so grateful that the Highway 4 corridor is untouched by the fire and that our wineries and tasting rooms are open and operating. The 22nd Annual Calaveras Grape Stomp will go on as planned on October 3rd in Murphys Park. To support those left in need after the fire, proceeds from the sale of Grape Stomp T-Shirts will be donated to the Calaveras Community Foundation’s Disaster Relief Fund. And, as always, all proceeds from the Silent Auction will be donated to local non-profit groups, many of whom are also involved in disaster relief.

Free Shopping Bags At Sierra Hills Market From Leanne Smith

Posted by: thepinetree on 10/02/2015 02:07 PM
Murphys, CA...Excited to announce a new partnership with my company and the Crowshaw family that owns Sierra Hills market and Angels Food market. We have been working on this project for a couple of months. We both wanted to do something that would serve our community. So we came up with the idea of shopping bags, because of the 1,000"s of plastic shopping bags that are used every month at his families stores. We did our research and discovered that 95% of those bags are not recycled, and that there is a huge impact on our environment here in Calaveras county! So, Starting today when you go into the Murphys store you will see a display by the magazines. It's for a FREE shopping bag. If you use one of these bags just 11 times you are making a huge difference in our environment! You can also find a schedule of free classes for the month of October. Additional racks will be at the murphys health food store and angels food market in the next few weeks.

Sierra Pacific Industries Thanks Contractors for their Help with Butte Fire

Posted by: thepinetree on 09/30/2015 06:40 AM
Anderson, CA -- Sierra Pacific Industries (SPI) today expressed gratitude to local logging and road construction contractors who took tremendous risks to help control the Butte Fire that burned in Calaveras County, CA this month. During the fire, logging and road building contractors, timber fallers, trucking companies, and other related businesses mobilized equipment to various locations which proved to be critical to limiting the spread of fire. “These businesses and individuals made great sacrifices of time and effort, and in most cases took time off from their primary business activity to build fire lines for the protection of communities threatened by the Butte Fire” said SPI District Forest Manager Tim Tate. “We applaud the courageous efforts of local, state, and federal fire fighters, but the contractors also deserve credit for the work they accomplished,” he added.

Bear Valley's Mark Phillips narrates a wonderful video that was created for the Ebbetts Pass Historical Association. The Video runs about 50 minutes and gives a fascinating & entertaining view of the history of the Bear Valley Area.
