Operator Error Leads to Dirt Bike Rider in Jail.

Pine Grove, CA...Saturday night, one of our patrol deputies spotted a green enduro style dirt bike in the Red Corral area that linked to a reported armed suspect earlier this week. The driver of dirt bike was speeding and crossing over the double yellow lines so our deputy attempted to stop him. But, he fled and our deputy was forced to give chase. The pursuit ended on Dunshee Road in Pine Grove when the rider decided to go off-road into the woods.

Arnold, CA...For the past few weeks Calaveras County has felt like a slow moving train wreck.  There is a tremendous amount of noise in any train wreck, but in this case no one is listening. And no one seems to notice that the train wreck is actually the future of Calaveras County. The train left the station in May of 2016 when the Calaveras Board of Supervisors passed an “Urgency Ordinance” with a vote of 4 to 1. The ordinance prescribed rules and regulations for the legal cultivation of cannabis in Calaveras County.

There will be sufficient staffing in place, using CUSD staff as well as substitute staff, to provide a safe, secure and productive learning environment for our elementary students. We are also working to re-open our middle school and high schools as soon as possible, once we can secure sufficient staff to do so.

Sacramento, CA...California Attorney General Xavier Becerra today announced a $120 million multistate settlement with General Motors Company (GM) over allegations that the company concealed safety issues related to defective ignition switches in GM vehicles. California will be receiving over $7 million. The settlement, reached among the attorneys general of 49 states and the District of Columbia and GM, concludes a multistate investigation into the auto manufacturer’s failure to disclose in a timely manner known safety defects associated with unintended key-rotation and/or ignition-switch related issues in several models and model years of GM vehicles.

Bear Valley, CA...Caltrans is reporting that Hwys 4, 108 & 120 or Ebbetts, Sonora & Tioga Passes remain closed after the overnight snow. The weather is warming into the weekend and the passes will reopen as Caltrans can make them safe. Hwy 88 is open with chain controls in the Kirkwood area.

Calaveras Teachers Remain on Picket Lines; Will Canvass Community for Support to End Strike

San Andreas, CA...Calaveras teachers are back on the picket lines today after talks Wednesday failed to settle a fair contract for teachers. “We thought we had a deal on Wednesday, we came in ready to settle this and not strike based on what we heard from Superintendent Mark Campbell and the school board. And it didn’t happen. This is another example of the district saying one thing, and doing something else,” said Calaveras Unified Educators’ Association (CUEA) President Lorraine Angel. “It’s disrespectful.”

At higher elevations, rain showers until early morning, then heavy rain and snow showers late in the night. Windy, colder. Lows 23 to 38 higher elevations...35 to 45 lower elevations. No snow accumulation lower elevations...up to 3 inches higher elevations. Snow level above 8000 feet after midnight. Prevailing southwest winds 15 to 30 mph with gusts to around 55 mph...except southwest 25 to 50 mph with gusts to around 65 mph over ridges. Friday Mostly cloudy in the morning then becoming partly cloudy. At lower elevations, a chance of rain showers. At higher elevations, a chance of rain and snow showers in the morning, then a chance of snow showers in the afternoon. Highs 32 to 47 higher elevations...44 to 56 lower elevations. No snow accumulation lower elevations...up to 1 inch higher elevations. Snow level 5000 feet increasing to 6000 feet in the afternoon. Prevailing southwest winds up to 15 mph. This project, which would stretch 1.2 miles along State Route 120 from Ponderosa Lane to the Tenaya Elementary School, would widen existing pavement to allow the installment of bike lanes and new sidewalks, new crosswalks and curb ramps.The effort would also improve and close gaps for pedestrian pathways within the project limits.

Due to Teachers Strike all Calaveras Unified Schools to Remain Closed on Friday

San Andreas, CA...Given the ongoing uncertainty regarding available teaching and support staff due to the teachers strike, and the resulting inability to secure sufficient staffing to operate safe, secure and productive schools, all CUSD schools will be closed on Friday. We are working to determine who will be reporting to their assigned positions and what degree of substitute staff we can secure in order to resume operations on Monday.
