Farm to Family Program to Feed Hungry

The Calaveras Farm to Family program is a cooperative effort to help feed the hungry of Calaveras County. Due to recent changes in the economy, Food Bank donations have fallen below demand and families who have never applied for supplemental food are signing up for help. In order to meet the increased demand and provide healthy fruits and vegetables, Calaveras County residents are asked to think about ways they can help provide food for the hungry.....

Gardeners and Farmers can plant an extra row, citizens can sign up to help plant, tend, harvest or transport produce in their neighborhoods and anyone who has extra planting space can be connected to people who want to help create community gardens & neighborhood plots. Backyard fruit trees that may normally go un-harvested can be put to good use.

In order to organize labor and donations, UC Cooperative Extension is conducting a survey at http://cecalaveras.ucdavis.edu/index.cfm. After completing the survey participants will be contacted with information about how to proceed. Members of the public without Internet access can contact Sean Kriletich at (209) 223-6837 or skriletich@ucdavis.edu.

Other community groups involved in this project include the Human Resources Council who will transport and distribute produce, Master Gardeners who have edible gardening information and classes planned at their 4th Saturday Open Garden Days and Behavioral Health's Job Development team who will provide opportunities to connect gardeners with people who want to learn how to grow food. In addition, nutrition educators from University of California Cooperative Extension will provide nutrition and home canning information so Food Bank recipients can learn how to use and store unfamiliar fruits and vegetables.

This project is expected to bring communities together as we all work to meet the needs of the hungry in Calaveras County.

Please contact Ken Churches at cdcalaveras@ucdavis.edu or (209) 754-6475 with your agricultural questions. To speak with a Certified Master Gardener: Calaveras (209) 754-2880, Tuolumne (209) 533-5696, Amador (209) 223-6837, El Dorado (530) 621-5543.
