The Young and Young at Heart Flock to the Old Corner~ By Andrea Silva
By Entertainment Columnist, Andrea Silva
Copperopolis, CA....The Old Corner Saloon in Copperopolis, affectionately dubbed “The O.C”, held its first Open Mic night on Saturday. Local Stand-up comedians, magicians, and musicians paraded their craft on stage while crowds heckled, jeered and cheered. The amount of talent that can be found in the tiny town of Copperopolis was astounding. Even more impressive might be diversity of the audience members. The eclectic crowd ranged from young cowboys, to old bikers and everything in between. Owner of The Old....
Corner Saloon, Oddie states “We are testing out open mic night for the first time to see how it goes” but admitted that he was please with the results, despite it being their first attempt.
Comedian Jeff Pease spotlighted the evening creating songs about his friends in the crowd and spicing up a hand-me-down version of “Baby Hit Me One More Time”. The crowd booed in jest but minutes later rolled with laughter. Jeff was followed up by Adam Rodgers who also created his own songs about various audience members and some laughable songs about ones anatomy issues.
The Old Corner Saloon has seen its share of infamous people, having opened in 1860 it took on a brief stint as a brothel. It was also a favorite watering hole of Black Bart himself. A photo of the old west pirate standing at the bar still hangs above the beer taps. More recently The O.C. played host to the T.V. crew from “Good Day Sacramento” who televised the hang-out on a segment of “Our Town”.
Oddie, takes a high tech approach when running the antique establishment. He organizes Karaoke Nights, Live Music, and has dabbled with the possibility of hosting a Wii tournament. The owner also takes photos of his guests kicking up their heels, and posts them immediately on the website which also broadcasts on the T.V. and computer screens inside the bar. Guests can later log on to the oldcorner.com website, to view the photo chronicles.
