"The Big Seed and Gardening Book Exchange" Next Saturday!

Next weekend, Saturday 28th, is the big seed and gardening book exchange event sponsored by the Foothill Collaborative for Sustainability (FoCuS) and Tuolumne County Master Gardeners. Anyone who is scrambling to make ends meet, who loves to garden, or who would like to plant a row for the hungry should not miss this opportunity to learn how to grow your own food and pick up some great seeds to start your veggies this year! Master....

Gardeners will have a table of information about how to start a garden, plant vegetables from seeds, and will be able to answer any questions you might have. Garden writer, Marlys Bell will be there to share her wealth of knowledge and let you know about her upcoming class on Victory Gardens: 2009 Style. Also in attendance will be local farmers from Red Earth Farm, Upsprout Farm, and Bald Mountain Farm to share their seeds and wisdom, the Rock Garden Society will share seeds for drought tolerant ornamentals, and Jason Diestel will be present with information and a show special on his fabulous humus from the Diestel Turkey Farm.

The event was the inspiration of gardener and FoCuS Executive Director, Tamara Mitchell. After years of starting gardens from seed, she was frustrated by the fact that she often only needed six vegetable seeds and with 200 seeds in a packet, the extras go unused! She spends hours pouring over seed catalogs each year and carefully selects only non-genetically modified seeds and varieties that will yield especially tasty or heirloom varieties.

If you find yourself with the same dilemma and would like to share your spare seeds, or if you just want to drop by to get some great advice and pick up some seeds without exchanging, you are welcome. First come, first served on table space. It's bound to be a wild three hours where you'll be able to pick up some great seeds, some great advice, and probably makes some new friends.

As an added bonus, there will be a table set up where you can drop off or pick up gardening books, magazines and catalogues for free. Comb through your bookshelves and see if there is anything you're done with that others may be interested in using.

For more information contact Tamara Mitchell: 209-694-8399 or visit www.foothillsustainability.org.
