Re-Thinking The Edible Garden

Master Gardeners March Open Garden Day will be held March 28 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at their Demonstration Garden at the Government Center, 891 Mountain Ranch Road, San Andreas. The featured topic at 10:30 a.m. will be “Elements of a Successful Edible Garden”. ....

Participants will benefit from fresh ideas that will improve garden production as well as tested tips that will make growing edible crops less of a chore and more of an enjoyable activity.

Master Gardeners will encourage the public to take a second look at their gardens. What is nature providing them in their gardens that will aide in successfully growing crops throughout the year? Are there new locations in the yard that could be used to grow fruits or vegetables? Is there a thorough understanding about vegetables being planted: how long they take to mature, how resistant they are to disease, how long they will produce? These ideas and many more should give attendees a new outlook on how to increase the bounty from their gardens.

Gardening information is offered free of charge. In addition, the learning center will be staffed by Master Gardeners who will answer questions and distribute reference information. Tours of the demonstration garden will also be available.

When the garden is not open, home gardening assistance is offered by Master Gardeners through the Help Line: 754-2880. The public may call the number, leave a message regarding the problem, and a Master Gardener will return the call.

For additional details contact the UC Cooperative Extension office at 754-6477.
