Soon to Be 100 Years Old, Norma Lena Mueller, Passed Away on April 7, 2009

San Andreas, CA....Norma Lena Molfino Mueller, of San Andreas, passed away on April 7th, 2009 at Mark Twain St.Josephs Hospital. She would have celebrated her 100th Birthday on April 26th. She was born in 1909 in Amador County on the Molfino Ranch outside of Jackson. Her education began in a one room school built in land her grandparents donated. She graduated from Jackson High School and attended Western Business College in Sacramento....

She learned the value of hard work and determination from her Italian grandmother who ran the family ranch for 24 years. She often accompanied her father as he delivered logs with his Fagiol truck to mining operations in Amador, Calaveras and Tuolumne Counties. She shares the joy of a large extended family. Stories from her youth recall card parties, community dances and traveling with siblings and cousins up the Alpine Highway, Hwy 88, to Carson Pass, to Yellowstone and Yosemite Parks and to the construction site at Boulder Dam where she won an ice cream eating contest against one of her workers!

In 1941, Norma married Walter Mueller, a state forestry ranger. Their honeymoon was a trip to St. Louis to meet his family, first of many they would take together. They raised two daughters, Janet and Nancy, at homes below the Mt. Zion forestry lookout and in Mokelumne Hill and San Andreas. Norma was a homemaker and wonderful cook known for her ravioli and pasta dishes. She loved to travel to the Sierras where she and the girls would set up a cookout while waiting for Walter to finish fishing. After retirement, she and Walter traveled in their trailer throughout California, Canada and the rest of the United States, often visiting their daughters on the East Coast. They celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in 1991.

Following her husband's death in 1995, Norma stayed in the San Andreas home they bought in 1950. She loved her neighbors and many friends, her garden, her word puzzles and working on embroidery projects that became treasured gifts. She met challenges of age and health with humor and grittiness. She and her daughter Janet traveled each Summer back to New Hampshire to be with her daughter Nancy and family. She made her last cross country trip in 2005 by AMTRAK over the Rockies and through the Midwest. Last November she traveled to Yosemite where she enjoyed lunch at the Ahwahnee Hotel. She looked forward to returning to celebrate her 100th birthday. Her family plans to honor her life in an upcoming visit to Yosemite and lunch at the Ahwahnee.

Normal was a 75 year member of Ursula Parlor 1, Native Daughters of the Golden West, and a longtime member of St. Andrews Parish in San Andreas.

Norma is survived by her daughters, Janet, of Eugene Oregon; Nancy Pike (David) of Orange, New Hampshire; a granddaughter, Jennifer McAllister (Jim) and a great grandson, Steven McAllister of Orange New Hampshire; a sister-in-law, Viola Raaf of Belleville, Illinois; and numerous Molfino and Oneto cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband Walter; her sister Margaret Boitano; her brother Steve Molfino; and a half sister Antonett Vela.

A funeral mass will be held at St. Andrew Church on Wednesday, April 15th at 10am. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 14th, at the San Andreas Memorial Chapel from 4 to 8pm. Burial will be in the St. Andrew's Catholic Cemetary.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association or a charity of your choice.
