The Stanislaus National Forest will Be Implementing a 90 Acre Prescribed Burn in Femmons Meadow Area on May 25th
Contingent on favorable weather and fuel conditions, the Stanislaus NF's Groveland Ranger District will be implementing a 90 acre prescribed burn in the Femmons Meadow area, located approximately 8 miles northeast of the Community of Buck Meadows, beginning on approximately May 25, 2009, and lasting for several days. Smoke will be visible from Highway 120 and drift smoke will be present in the early morning and evening hours.....
Benefits of the prescribed burn include:
* Reduce the buildup of flammable forest fuels,both ground fuels and ladder fuels;
* Reduce the threat of uncontrolled, large and damaging fires;
* Improve protection for Stanislaus NF resources and adjacent private forest lands;
* Enhance wildlife habitat improved deer browse and the enhanced protection of Spotted Owl habitat;
* Maintain and improve protection for Granite Creek watershed values
Prescribed burning is an effective, cost efficient method of reducing flammable forest fuels, improving firefighting capabilities, and reducing the impacts of large, uncontrolled damaging wildland fires.
Prescribed, low-intensity burns enhance wildlife habitat, protect and maintain water quality and soil productivity, improve forest ecosystem health, and reduce the threat of uncontrolled conflagrations. The Sierra Nevada is a fire-dependent ecosystem, where fire is part of natural forest processes.
