Truckin' fror Hospice Poker Run Copperopolis~by Charity Maness
Copperopolis, CA...While on a leisurely drive to drop off my mail at the Copperopolis post office this Saturday I was pleasantly surprised to find the street literally lined with motorcycles of all makes and models. I amazingly enough found one little spot in front of Cal Tel, I swooped in and grabbed my camera. After my initial glance around I realized it was not only the street that was full all the way from Reeds Turnpike to the Cal Fire Station, it was the parking lot at Calaveras Telephone, the parking lot at Union Mine Store front and back and every other imaginable nook and cranny that a motorcycle could possibly maneuver into. After wiping the 'kid in a candy store' look from my face I attempted to adopt the appearance of a seasoned journalist but was quickly detected as a newbie. The riders, however, took me under their wing and explained in layman's terms a Poker Run.....
Okay, here goes:
A Poker run is an organized event using a motorcycle, boat, car or other form of transportation where participants travel over a predesignated route and, at designated stops on the route, draw playing card(s). The object is to have the best poker hand at the end of the run. This is a fund raising event, so there was a registration fee and there are MANY sponsors.
This years event was hosted by Truckin for Hospice which was formed in 2002 to enable the trucking industry to join together to raise money for Hospice of San Joaquin and Community Hospice, Inc. Last year this event raised $80,000 for San Joaquin Hospice.
Today's Poker Run included stops in Lodi, Copperopolis at the Old Corner, Jamestown Harley Davidson for a chili-cook off, Oakdale, and Modesto, with a final bbq in Modesto put on by California Truck Centers.
John from Turlock was the first to greet
me and help me understand the basics
of a Poker Run. Patience should be his
middle name.
This is the line up for participants to
get their lunch and their poker card. A
very important item if you have any
intention of winning the grand prize at
the end of the rally with a good poker
hand. And the old excuse, "The wind
blew it away..I swear I had an Ace of
spades!" does not fly with this crowd.
California Trucking Association San
Joaquin Unit working hard to feed the
crowd and all for the wonderful cause
of raising funds for Hospice care.
Bill from Placerville has been riding this
Poker Run for seven years. He tries to
ride as many as he can. Please note
the patch on Bill's right shoulder. Bill is
a Patriot Guard Rider...I thank you Bill
and my son in the Marine Corp thanks
you.
John from Modesto with an '03 Indian,
has been riding in this Poker Run for 3
years.
Donna from Modesto with her
Sportster is enjoying her second year
on this run.
I was told this was merely the first
"wave" to pass through Copperopolis
today. Pretty impressive I tell you.
